How To Grow And Handle Fresh Herbs From Your Garden Beds Or Your Container Garden

By Mary Hanna

In any recipe calling for herbs, use fresh herbs. Preparing the herbs for your dish is easy. The more tender herbs like mint, parsley, basil and cilantro can be gathered in a bowl and snipped with scissors. This is the fastest and safest way to chop the herbs. If your recipe calls for the more hardy herbs like oregano, rosemary, or thyme you should use the stripping method. Hold a branch of the herb upright in your fingers and run the fingers of your other hand down the stalk stripping the tiny leaves free. The flavor will be more intense if you have gathered the herbs from your herb gardens or container gardens because they will be absolutely the freshest herbs available.

The best way to have fresh herbs is to plant and grow them yourself. No longer is there a designated herb garden. They can be found in your flower beds, along walkways or in pots on your porch. Many ambitious gardeners are finding new ways to incorporate herbs into their garden beds and their container gardens.

Many gardeners are unaware of the beauty of flowering herbs and never consider planting them within their flower beds. Some herbs that have beautiful flowers are purple coneflower, catmint, bee balm, yarrow, pinks, lavender, pot marigold, borage, feverfew, and nasturtium which is particularly lovely in fresh salads.. Many other herbs, such as parsley are excellent next to flowers of all sorts because of their spectacular foliage. When planting red or blue flowers, place purple basil around them for an artful arrangement.

Another area to consider is to use herbs as ground cover. The herbs that are suitable to this are the low growing oregano, chamomile, woolly and other creeping thyme, mint, and rosemary. Not only will it look pretty but it will be absolutely fragrant. Just be careful of the mint family, they tend to take over everything.

One of the best ways I have grown herbs is in containers. In fact, I like container gardening so much I wrote my eBook Container Gardening Secrets (available at ContainerGardeningSecrets.com), so everyone could enjoy this type of gardening. The beauty of a container garden is that it is portable and can be changed at a moments whim. When there is no more room in your garden, start a container garden which you can place on your door step or patio. Use them to fill in bare spots that come up during the gardening season or put them on a sunny window sill in your home for easy harvesting. Best of all you can bring your herb containers inside over the winter months and continue to harvest for months to add to your tasty meals or to be used for medicinal purposes.

Another way to employ pots in your garden is to plant invasive herbs such as mint into a pot and then plant pot and all into the ground. This is an easy trick to keep those creepers from taking over your garden beds.

Plant a container garden near your door with the cherry pie scented blue flower heliotrope and other fragrant herbs such as rosemary, thyme and basil. Every time you walk by you will be greeted with there delicious scent.

Some herbs that have grown on rocky hillsides over the centuries such as thyme, oregano and lavender are perfect for cracks in flag stone paths or walls and rock gardens. They thrive in hot dry areas with good drainage. Some believe that those herbs grown in these conditions produce much better flavor.

Now is the time to plant your herbs, whether it is in a garden bed, a cracked wall or a container garden. Use your imagination. Consider color height and texture when planting your gardens. Not only will it be visually pleasing but your cooking will improve too!

Happy Gardening!

Running Cars With Water

Mari DowlingWhen your concrete block production using hand molds is no longer sufficient you will want a machine to manufacture the blocks. There are a number of commercially made machines available. They do a good job but are quite pricey. Buy one if you can afford it and it will pay for itself with increased productivity. Building your own machine is the cheaper way to go.

Before the Phaeton, Tammy was showing a 1923 T Bucket at her local shows and through cruise-ins. It took a friend to step in and advise her as to what she would have to do to be able to compete with the “big boys”. “So I decided to up the ante,” Tammy smiled. She not only upped it with money, she threw in some gold nuggets just to ensure she would have quite an original ride.

When it is time to change the oil and oil filter in your car, the first thing you should do is make sure that you buy the right type of oil. Your owner’s manual should say what type of oil is right, although you can ask the person at the rockautoparts to look it up if you need to. Also, make sure that you have a container for the old oil to drain into.

When you’re indulging in a spa treatment at home you want to be able to see in the mirror as you apply your masks and various yummy body treatments. And don’t discount the power of a mirror if you and your man get up to some delectable spa massage and other… interactions. If you have a clear shower door like mine, you’ll want to keep it from steaming over so you can easily view (and join, if desired) any soaping-up action in there.

If you have already set your eyes on a used car, the most important thing that you need to do would be to have and take a look at the vehicle’s car history records. Ask the dealer or the party selling the car for these records. Do not buy a vehicle that has already been flooded for it would only prove to be useless to you. If it has already been in a serious accident, set your eyes on another vehicle instead. There are a lot of used cars being offered in the market so do not hesitate to look for another one.

A corollary to the “Every Man is a Jock” rule is that “Every Man is an Outdoorsman.” Maybe his idea of camping is driving a 40-foot RV into a campsite and plugging in, but he’ll still appreciate a gift he can use in the great outdoors.

I am not sure what kind of ashes these are. They’re very fine. I would think fireplace ashes but I’ve found pieces of branches too large for the fireplace. It appears something was burned here, right where the metal is placed, underneath the trees.

Through online and extensive collaborative network, you can also get any junk autos

, car parts, truck parts, and pickup parts. This site also provides you some high-grade and in-demand body parts, which contain auto lights, car lights, truck lights and headlights, automotive lighting, taillights. You can get all auto body you need which include discount rockauto parts as well as wholesale rockauto parts.

Some air filters are not cheap on late model vehicles. You can pay $15 or more for the part at a discount murfreesboro junkyard store. However, the mark up by auto shops can be over 100%. They may offer a discount or even free installation, but the filter alone yields them a nice profit for a job that frequently lasts less than five minutes. Changing an air filter often does not even require tools. You spin a wing nut or loosen a clip, remove a cover, and there is the filter waiting to be lifted out. Pull it out, put in the new one, replace the clip or nut, and you are on your way. It can save you many dollars quickly.

Used parts are a great option for the BMW owner. There are good parts available that were salvaged from wrecked cars. These parts are undamaged, still work, and are much cheaper than buying new. You should also ask at your local salvage yard; they may have just what you want.

NHL: Penguins rally, defeat Senators in shootout

Tuesday, March 6, 2007

Pittsburgh Penguins 5 4 Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators thought that the game was over. Coming into the third period, the Senators led the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1, dominating every aspect of the game. After only one goal by Colby Armstrong, Ray Emery would blank the Penguins for the next 45 minutes the game. Things spiraled out of control when Marc-Andre Fleury allowed Mike Fischer, Christoph Schubert, and Chris Kelly to score in under 10 minutes, stopping only 4 out of the 7 shots he faced, and was pulled before the end of the first in favor of backup goaltender Jocelyn Thibault. Thibault’s only mistake of the game came at 4:32 in the second period, when the Senators’ Dany Heatley scored a power play goal to make it a 3 score game. After Heatley’s goal, the offensive show the Senators had been putting on suddenly vanished. Backed by Thibault’s strong play in net, Penguins rookie Jordan Staal scored his NHL best 7th shorthanded goal to make it 4-2. Still down by multiple goals, recent acquisition Gary Roberts scored at 11:02, to narrow the margin to 1 goal. 1 minute and 8 seconds later, Ryan Malone tied it up for his 14th goal of the season.

After a scoreless overtime period, Pittsburgh’s Eric Christinsen and Ottawa’s Dean McAmmond both scored to even the shootout at one goal apiece. Sidney Crosby, who won Sunday’s game in Philadelphia in a shootout, would get the chance to win it for the Penguins. Crosby took the puck and beat Emery on the right side to lift the Penguins to the overtime victory, 5-4.

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Two ill after eating burgers laced with multi-purpose cleaner in Bathurst, Australia

Thursday, March 25, 2010

A prank by three young kitchen staff at Hungry Jack’s fast food restaurant in the Central-Western New South Wales city of Bathurst went wrong when two customers required medical treatment after eating burgers they had laced with multi-purpose cleaner.

According to staff at the Emergency Department of Bathurst Hospital, two Hungry Jack’s customers became ill Sunday night after eating burgers contaminated with a chemical believed to be multi-purpose cleaner. One of the patrons was in a serious condition upon arrival at Bathurst Hospital due to being allergic to an ingredient in the cleaning product. “He presented to the emergency department as he was having an allergic reaction after eating a burger from Hungry Jacks, he was in a really bad way when he arrived here and if he had waited much longer it could have been much worse,” said a Greater Western Area Health Service employee. “We called Hungry Jacks and they said that three of their employees had been goofing off and sprayed multi-purpose cleaner inside the burgers so we then treated the patients for poisoning.”

Both customers are expected to make a full recovery. During an investigation undertaken by Wikinews reporter Nathan Carter, it was learned that the chemical sprayed into the burgers was KAY multipurpose cleaner which is reported to cause nausea, diarrhoea and mucosal and gastric irritation. The Material Safety Data Sheet for KAY multipurpose cleaner lists Antonic Surfactants as its hazardous ingredient.

In New South Wales, it is a criminal offence to make food intended for sale unsafe punishable by 2 years imprisonment. Due to restrictions on the publication of the name of young people involved in crimes in New South Wales, the names of kitchen staff can not be published. Wikinews was told by Hungry Jack’s staff that the staff involved in the incident remained employed by Hungry Jack’s. Josh, a Hungry Jack’s manager at the Bathurst restaurant, told Wikinews that his boss Adam was aware of the food contamination issue and would be taking steps to address it.

Big 12 names players, coach of the year

Tuesday, March 7, 2006

After this weekend, Texas can celebrate not only bringing home the Big 12 Conference trophy but also having the All-Big 12 Player of the Year, P.J. Tucker, and the first recipient of the Defensive Player of the Year award, LaMarcus Aldridge.

Rival Kansas, who tied with Texas for the No. 1 slot in the conference but was denied the trophy, had coach Bill Self named Coach of the Year and Brandon Rush named Freshman of the Year. Michael Neal of Oklahoma was named Newcomer of the Year.

The All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league’s head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Tucker, a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team choice, is the first Longhorn to earn Big 12 Player of the Year recognition. He leads the team and ranks sixth overall in the conference in scoring (16.1), while leading the league in rebounding (9.0). He is also fourth in field goal percentage with a .531 mark. He has led UT in scoring seven times in league play and is second in the Big 12 overall with 10 double-doubles.

Aldridge wins the first defensive honor awarded by the Big 12. He is first in the Big 12 with 59 blocks overall, including 27 in conference games. He has 81 defensive rebounds in 2005-06, ranking third in the league. Aldridge can score as well, leading the Big 12 with 13 double-doubles.

Neal is the second-straight Sooner and fourth overall to win Newcomer of the Year. One of the top long-range threats in the Big 12, the junior college transfer ranks first in conference games in 3-point field goal percentage (.495) and 3-point field goals per game (3.86). He is also averaging a team-best 14.8 points in league action. He has shot 50.0 percent or better from beyond the arc 11 times this season.

Rush is the first freshman in conference history to be named to the All-Big 12 First Team. The top scoring freshman in the conference with 15.1 points per game, Rush also ranks seventh with a 6.6 rebounding average. He is the fourth KU player to surpass 400 points (408) in his freshman season. The native of Kansas City, Mo. is the second Jayhawk to win freshman accolades (Jeff Boschee, 1998-99).

Self wins his first Big 12 coaching honor and the third for a Jayhawk mentor. After returning just 21.2 percent of his scoring from a year ago, Self guided KU to a share of the Big 12 regular season championship, its sixth in league annals. Starting three freshmen and two sophomores, Kansas recorded its 18th straight season with at least 22 victories.

The All-Big 12 First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention teams were also announced, while conference coaches also selected All-Defensive and All-Rookie Teams for the first time.
