Computer glitch delays online tax filing in Canada

Thursday, March 8, 2007

Computer systems used by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the handling of tax filing data for Canadians have been temporarily shutdown due to infrastructure problems.[1] A March 7 article in the Toronto Star[2] states that due to errors in the electronic filing system, Canada Revenue Agency will be unable to accept any tax filings electronically or corrections to prior filings.

A fact sheet from the CRA [3] states that “until the problem is resolved, we cannot process returns filed on paper, or returns filed electronically before the system interruption. Refunds will be delayed until processing is resumed”.

A check of the taxing authority’s website[4] regarding the issue states “We have temporarily shut down public access to electronic services to ensure the integrity of taxpayer information.” and that “We have now traced the source of the problem to software maintenance conducted on March 4, 2007. We are currently working to bring all systems back online gradually.”

A CRA press release dated March 6 [5] states “Commissioner of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Michel Dorais today instructed some computer applications related to personal income tax filing to be temporarily halted.” he also said, “there is no indication that this situation was caused by intrusion, hacking, or computer virus”. Further, “These applications include online services like Efile, Netfile, and My Account. Mr. Dorais said that he instructed that this preventative measure be taken following indications that CRA computer systems have run into infrastructure problems. In order to safeguard existing systems and to maintain the integrity of CRA’s taxpayer information holdings, Mr Dorais ordered tax filing processes halted.”

An article in The Globe and Mail [6] states that taxpayers “can wait for Netfile to return to service, or they can print their returns and mail them to the CRA”, which will be processed when the computer glitch is resolved.

The deadline for Canadians to submit tax returns is April 30. The CRA indicates it is too soon to speculate on whether the filing deadline will be extended. They expect to restore all services, including EFile and Netfile, well in advance of the filing deadline.[7]

The shutdown also affects third-party companies that prepare tax returns and electronically file the data using the EFile facility on behalf of clients. According to the CRA, millions of individual Canadians use the Netfile service each year.

The Agency will provide updates daily to the media until the situation is resolved.

Creekstone Farms sues USDA for refusing to allow mad cow testing

Monday, March 27, 2006

Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, an organic meatpacking company based in Arkansas City, Kansas, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for what the company claims is threats by the USDA that it would face prosecution if it proceeds with plans to test nearly 100% of its beef for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease or BSE.

The USDA position is that allowing any meatpacking company to test every cow would undermine the agency’s official position, a position that holds to random testing as a scientifically adequate measure to assure safety. It also claims that 100% testing does not ensure food safety because the disease is difficult to detect in younger animals.

The USDA currently tests about 1% of cattle slaughtered in the U.S. The USDA’s objection is believed to be the result of pressure from larger meatpacking operations. In 2004, the president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association told the Washington Post that “If testing is allowed at Creekstone, we think it would become the international standard and the domestic standard, too.” Creekstone Farms says tests cost about $20 per animal, increasing the cost of beef by about 10 cents per pound.

Six Arabian Beauty Secrets Every Woman Should Know}

Submitted by: Danica Reynes

There are several pieces of advice that women in the Middle East will give those who desire to increase their internal and external beauty: eat right and avoid stress; do not go outside in the mid-day sunlight, and if you do, make sure your skin is covered; if you use makeup ensure that you trust the brands you use; and consider whether your natural looks might be enhanced by cosmetic surgery.

Females of Arabic descent are renowned for their attractiveness and grace. Studies also reveal that Arab women have the healthiest and youngest looking skin around the globe. Here are a few beauty suggestions from Arabian women that will help you become more beautiful:

Consume nutritious food in order to feel and look great

Most Arab women find that a healthy diet works best when it comes to looking and feeling great. Cut down on processed foods, choosing more fresh produce as an alternative. As much as possible, take time to buy fresh meat from the market and cook your own food at home rather than buying fast foods. This way, you will get the right energy and nutrients you need for your daily activities and to stay healthy.

Enjoy some spa relaxation to improve how you feel

Many Arab women from the Middle East regularly visit spas to revitalize their skin. A spa is a great place to go to relax, and by lowering your stress you will also reduce the effects of aging, since the two are correlated. They primarily utilize masks and steam cleansing for their body, especially in the facial area. In addition, they are convinced of the advantages of Argan oil for healthy hair and skin. Argan oil, which is typically found in Morocco, contains a number of elements including vitamin E, phenolic acid, carotenes, phenols, squalene and a host of fatty acids that repair dry and damaged hair and rehydrate the skin. Argan oil keeps the skin looking fresher and younger than most women their age.

Remain out of the sunlight’s range during its hours of greatest intensity

You skin requires some consideration so it can stay protected and young looking. The Arab women believe that it helps a lot to stay indoors when the sun is at its peak. The sun’s heat can become very scorching, destroying skin cells and hastening aging. Always apply sunscreen to shield your exposed skin from the sun when you go sunbathing, go swimming or go out at noontime.

Wearing clothes that cover the skin offers added protection

Females in Arab countries wear concealing clothes and scarves to protect their skin. It is recommended that you wear scarves, hats, and the right clothing to cover your skin from the sun’s heat, dust, and other dirt that may harm your skin.

Choose only trusted makeup brands to protect your face

Don’t buy cheap products when you use makeup. You don’t need to purchase the ones that are expensive, but surely don’t buy the low standard brands. The Arabian woman’s secret to protecting her attractive, youthful face lays in her use of superior quality make-up brands.

Plastic surgery is one choice people consider to try to regain their beauty

Arab women put much effort in looking youthful and attractive whether it be in using natural cosmetics or surgery. Women of notoriety or wealth are usually the women who normally choose to have breast implants, liposuction and anti-aging treatments.

If you desire to be as pretty and healthy as Arab females, stay natural always. Choose naturally healthy foods, natural oils and other ingredients for cosmetic treatments, and other natural ways to keep your skin and body protected. Synthetic varieties may damage your skin or body. It is important to choose only the finest synthetic oils to avoid problems.

Sexy video clips influence young girls more than boys, study shows

Friday, February 15, 2008

Sexy video clips have a more negative influence on girls than on boys, says Dutch pop professor Tom ter Bogt. Ter Bogt investigated the influence of sexy video clips on the thoughts, behaviour and self-image of 13 to 16 year old children. After viewing the clips, girls felt that outward appearance was more important, they were less satisfied with their own appearance, and they became less resolute in denying permissive sex.

In his research Ter Bogt showed (censored) sexy videos from well-known pop-artists 50 Cent, Amanda Wilson ft. Freemasons, Nelly, NERD and David Guetta to a group of 250 children. An equally-sized group watched the concert performances of the same songs. After seeing the videos the girls in the test group felt more strongly that outward appearance was important for girls, and they tended to be less satisfied about their own appearances. Unexpectedly the videos did not affect the boys in the groups as much, their behaviour and self-image was more or less unchanged, contrary to previous beliefs that boys can be influenced by sexy videos to participate in group rapes.

Tom ter Bogt was instated today as professor at the University of Utrecht in pop music and youth culture. “There is no reason for a moral panic,” Ter Bogt says, “young people need to experiment with sex. But these experiments must be based on equality between men and women, and the relationships in these videos are not based on equality. The clips undermine the self-image of young girls. When they start to define their identity with their looks, they may lose self-confidence, will perform worse in school, and will suffer more from eating disorders.”

The conclusions of Ter Bogt are confirmed by research by US psychologists, but also shows that parents have a major influence in their girls’ self-image.

Handling Fatal Errors In Your Pc

Submitted by: James Cyber

A fatal error can be defined as an error which stops the processing of a program and results in data loss that the particular program was processing and was not saved on the disk. Fatal errors occur mainly due to illegal code given to the CPU, some codes are so written that they are not accepted by every CPU design, so they end up in giving a fatal error. If you have installed a particular application or software and fatal error has occurred after the installation; remove that application and restart the computer, it might resolve the problem.

Very often, when one gets a fatal error, it does not recover from it because it is a problem that the operating system could not elucidate. In most of the cases fatal errors take place when one or the other device or device driver is not working properly. Broadly speaking, fatal errors are nothing but errors in the memory. When a device driver does not work properly, it uses memory that is formerly has been used, so it results in a fatal error. Fatal error may also occur if you have got your hands on in-operative data. It affects the stability of the system and causes a fatal error. Relying on online technical support or online tech support often results to be helpful.

Whenever a fatal error occurs it creates a carbon copy of the whole process and stores in the core memory of the computer. One must use software like ccleaner which removes the crap data stored in the computer and resolve any registry issues, because registry issues are also a very common reason for fatal errors. One of the most common fatal error is sudden crash of the computer with the appearance of a blue screen which ring in showing Physical memory dump with some numbers, it mainly occurs due to discordance of some new hardware or software with your system. Formatting the system may not be a good option, because problem will re-occur as you install that particular software or hardware again. Try using more compatible software or other devices and use system restore instead of formatting the operating system. Before installing any software or application, always depend on computer support service to acknowledge its installation pre-requisites.

Another type of fatal error is STOP error, which can occur due to anything like hardware failure, poor power supply, incompatible drivers etc. You can try to solve this by going to device manager and removing that device or hardware. To do this, Go to msconfig and remove all the unimportant applications; if it does not solve the purpose then it s time for you to go for online pc support. Computer support service is a very good option for solving fatal errors when the situation is out of your reach. They provide the best online tech support with well trained technicians. Most of the problems are software related, so they don t even touch your machine physically and solve the problem in few minutes. So with the help of online PC support you can handle the fatal errors in a better and an easy way as compared to other ones. Other precautions that you can take to avoid fatal errors are as follows

1.Use good antivirus software.

2.Use disk cleanup software to delete all the unwanted window components

3.Use good anti-spyware program.

4.Use devices that are compatible with your system.

Make sure you follow the above precautions and protect your PC from fatal errors.

US House of Representatives rejects bail out bill in vote

Monday, September 29, 2008

The US House of Representatives rejected a bill on the USD 700 billion bail out of US banks. The voting on the bill has completed.

If passed, the bailout plan would have allowed for the United States government to purchase devalued mortgage backed securities, resulting from the subprime mortgage crisis from troubled financial institutions. The US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has said that the plan could cost up to $700 billion.

There has been considerable debate over several parts of the plan, which failed with 228 votes opposing, 205 supporting, and 1 not voting. The bill had much more support by the Democratic Party (with 60% of Democrats voting “aye”) than the Republican Party (of which only 33% voted for the bill).

George W. Bush described the bill before the vote was made. “This legislation deals with complex issues, and negotiators were asked to address them in a very short period of time. I appreciate the leadership of members on both sides of the aisle, who came together when our nation was counting on them. Negotiations are sometimes difficult, but their hard work and cooperation paid off,” he said, in a speech in which Bush begged politicians to support the bill.

Bush continued describing the bill. “The bipartisan economic rescue plan addresses the root cause of the financial crisis — the assets related to home mortgages that have lost value during the housing decline. Under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, the federal government will be authorized to purchase these assets from banks and other financial institutions, which will help free them to resume lending to businesses and consumers.”

According to BBC News, congressmen opposed the bill after receiving 50 times as many letters against the bill as for the bill. George Bush attempted to respond to the criticisms of the bill by US citizens. “I know many Americans are worried about the cost of the bill, and I understand their concern. This bill commits up to 700 billion taxpayer dollars, because a large amount of money is necessary to have an impact on our financial system. However, both the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office and the Office of Management and Budget expect that the ultimate cost to the taxpayer will be far less than that”.

Australian government provides $15.8 million for North Adelaide Technical College

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Australian Minister for Vocational Education and Training, Gary Hardgrave has announced the government will provide AU$15.8 million to establish an Australian Technical College in North Adelaide. The minister said the government was entering into a partnership with the Archdiocese of Adelaide and consortium of industrial and manufacturing companies.

The North Adelaide college will be located in Elizabeth and be operated as an independent non-government school. The college is one of 25 to be established across the country.

Enrolments at the college will begin in 2007 and will offer courses in areas where identified skills shortages exist in the North Adelaide region, specifically – engineering, construction, electronics and cooking.

Mr Hardgrave said that the proposed college had been popular among the North Adelaide business community. “This important initiative has been well received by North Adelaide business and industry, and will help to address skills needs and provide opportunities for those in greatest need, including a lot of Indigenous students in the region,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“The fact that this College is being led by local employers, local government and other key stakeholders, means it will be truly industry and community driven,” he said.

Australian Technical Colleges were established to cater for year 11 and 12 students who wish to do an apprenticeship as part of their school education.

The Australian Education Union has expressed a number of concerns about the model put forward by the government. In a report, they claim that trade facilities at TAFE colleges (operated by state governments) will deteriorate as funding is diverted to the ATCs. The union is also concerned that ATCs are supposed to be selective VET schools. According to the union they will have selective entry and preferential funding. It is feared that teachers will be lured away from schools and TAFE colleges to higher paid positions in ATCs.

The Education Union suggested that the government invest in schools that already offer vocational education programs.

EU adopts renewable energy measures

Friday, March 9, 2007File:Angela Merkel SJ8.jpg

European Union leaders on the second day of their summit have agreed on measures to decrease emission of greenhouse gases and to start using more biological fuels. The governments of the 27 countries in Brussels endorsed 3 main binding targets:

 • to reduce greenhouse gas emission levels by the year 2020 by 20% compared to the level of 1990
 • renewable energy should make up 20% of energy consumption by 2020
 • a 10% share for biofuels in the total consumption of fuels in E.U. transport.

This way, the E.U. wants to contribute in reaching the strategic goal of limiting the global average temperature increase to less than 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The individual targets for countries will need to be established based on national starting points and potentials, according to the plan. The plans don’t mention an enforcement mechanism yet.

“We can say to the rest of the world, Europe is taking the lead. You should join us fighting climate change.”

In the summit’s conclusions, the E.U. underlines its ambitions as a leading force in international climate protection. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the targets “ambitious and credible”.

Europe is prepared to even increase the objectives if other developed countries follow suit, and it invites other countries to come forward with their plans for the environment beyond 2012, when the Kyoto protocol ends. In June, Merkel plans to discuss the measures with the other members on the Group of Eight summit.

The proposal takes into account the sovereignty of individual countries to determine exactly which energy sources they use. More specifically, each member state should decide if they wish to use nuclear power or not. Some countries oppose the use of nuclear energy as an alternative to fossil fuels, and Germany is even in the process of dismantling its nuclear energy production. France on the other hand produces 70% of its electricity in nuclear power plants. [13% of France’s total energy consumption is nuclear.] The report also stresses the importance of nuclear safety in the discussion over nuclear energy.

The summit also asked the European Commission to come up with proposals to reduce energy consumption in lighting and offices by 2008 and 2009. The idea is to replace conventional light bulbs with more energy-efficient alternatives such as the energy saving light bulb.

Another energy-related topic in the conclusions is an agreement on increased security of energy supply. Through member state solidarity and a more interconnected and integrated market, eastern European countries hope to secure their energy supplies in case Russia would cut the supply.

During their two-days summit, the E.U. also discussed economic growth, employment, better regulations and international relations issues.

Can Affiliate Marketing Supplement Your Retirement Income?

Submitted by: Geoffrey Wells

Affiliate marketing on the Internet is simply the latest application of a normal business practice of earning a commission for a referral. Lawyers, real estate agents and many other professions have sent customers to colleagues and received a piece of any generated business for years. Affiliate marketing is simply the same principle applied on a much larger scale. Every business needs customers to survive but the process of acquiring customers is actually one of the biggest expenses for most businesses.

Who Can Do Affiliate Marketing? Almost anyone with some basic knowledge of computers and the internet can do affiliate marketing. It’s becoming a very popular way for baby boomers to supplement their retirement income. In the online world, there are affiliate programs for practically any product or service you can imagine. The process is straightforward. Send a potential client to the seller’s web page and, if they buy something, then you will receive a commission. If you have a popular, high traffic web site, affiliate marketing can be very lucrative. It’s all a matter of conversion.

What is Conversion? Conversion is stated as a percentage and is the number of people that complete a purchase compared to the number of people sent to the sales page. It can also be expressed as the number of people that click on your affiliate link as compared to the number that visit your web site. You can get a very rough idea of your potential sales by using a conversion rate of 1%. Your actual conversion rates could be as much as 10% or more but 1% is a good starting point. Let’s assume you have a web site that gets 10,000 visitors per week. If 1% click on your affiliate link, that means you will send 100 visitors on to your seller’s landing page. If they also have a 1% conversion rate, then one of the leads you send will make a purchase and you’ll receive a commission for the sale. If you are selling, for example, a $ 50 ebook with a $ 30 commission, you can expect to make $ 120 a month from this page.

How Do I Make Real Money? It all depends on the numbers. Guide more people to your web site, increase your conversion and you will earn more money. Get started by carefully choosing the product you wish to sell. A lot of people start their affiliate marketing business by promoting Clickbank products. Clickbank.com is a company that acts as the agent for people selling digital products – software, ebooks, etc. – anything that can be downloaded directly to the purchaser’s computer. Every sale goes through them and you can be sure you will be paid your commission. The list of available products will show you the conversion rate of the page you will be sending your leads to. Not it is up to you to presell the customer and get the highest possible conversion rate for your affiliate link and your seller’s landing page. Let’s try out example again but this time with a 10% conversation rate. With a 10% conversion rate 10,000 visitors to your web page will result in 1,000 click-throughs. If the seller’s landing page can also generate a 10% conversion rate, then you’ll make 100 sales for the week or 100 x $ 30 = $ 3000 or $ 12,000 for the month. Now, let’s assume that you have several web pages that are all getting a similar amount of traffic. That’s affiliate marketing.
