Lorry drops thirteen tonnes of fish in British town

Tuesday, March 29, 2005

A lorry spilt thirteen tonnes of raw fish on a road in the small British town of Shaftesbury, Dorset, earlier today.

Crates of iced fish, worth £80,000, apparently burst out the rear doors of the lorry as it climbed a hill.

The BBC reports Dorset Police as saying “It appears as the lorry started its ascent up the hill the load in the rear of the articulated container slipped backwards, probably on the wet floor, and the weight of the fish on the rear doors forced the doors open.”

The clean-up was hampered by poor weather conditions as Dorset County Council struggled to use a digger and a second lorry to clear the fish.

Virginians melee at used Apple iBook sale

Thursday, August 18, 2005

“Total chaos” is how many described the melee that resulted from a sale of used Apple iBook laptop computers at the Richmond International Raceway (RIR) by the Henrico County, Virginia school system.

Officials estimated nearly 5,000 people thronged the sale for the $50, four-year-old computers. Among them were 17 injured, four requiring hospitalization – one for a leg injury, and three for heat-related illness, said Henrico County Police. Reports of trampling in the stampede were not uncommon, and one driver reportedly tried to drive through the throng of prospective buyers.

Alice Jemerson, an elderly customer said, “They bum rushed the gates and I was knocked over, fighting for my life. All these people were on top of me.”

Shortly after 7am EST officials opened the gates and many residents ran hysterically toward the building where the sale was to occur at 9am.

At a post sale press conference, Henrico County Police spokesman Lieutenant Doug Perry told reporters, “A few bad apples found their way inside. It looked worse than it was.”

Apple iBooks are the preferred computer for Henrico County schools, and Director of General Services of Henrico County Paul Proto, said changes were made to the event after tremendous interest was generated, some as far away as Europe and California. Officials closed and moved the sale from the Henrico county school warehouse to the RIR, after residents complained that their tax dollars were used to buy the computers, and they ought to have first right to repurchase them. The Henrico County Board of Supervisors voted to amend the County Code so that only residents could purchase the laptop computers.

Although officials had prohibited camping out and overnight parking, some in attendance reported that people began arriving at midnight.

Henrico Police Chief H.W. Stanley, Jr. said five patrol officers were originally planned for the event, a customary presence for an event the size authorities had estimated. But by 6 am, an enormous crowd was assembled at the front gate.

Officials present before opening told the crowd that automobiles would be allowed to enter first, which prompted many to run to their cars. But while some were running back to their cars, others rushed the gate. The resulting confusion created much anger, and guards closed the gates shortly thereafter.

Long lines encircling the sale building were commonplace, and one observer noted, “They’re going to see themselves on the news tonight, and see what fools they are.”

Some citizens, however, considered their wait worthwhile. Hairstylist and mother of two Sheress Blunt was one of the first hundred to buy one of the iBooks; she came with her mother and said they sneaked into the raceway through a side gate.

Tonya Vaughan arrived at 5:30 a.m., also bought one of the first iBooks and said three people offered to buy it from her for as much as $200. She declined however, saying, “I told them no way! I had worked too hard for it.”

Lt. Perry said many officers were complimented on the way they handled the crowd, adding that police were seen letting children who had been pushed aside, into the building.

Mr. Proto said, “There are no plans right now to have another iBook sale.”

Henrico County Battalion Police Chief Steve Wood said no arrests were made and the iBooks were sold out by 1pm EST.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

5 Tools To Create Traffic For A Website

Read An Opinion On:

Submitted by: Marie-Claire Smith

If you have any experience at all in Internet marketing, you already know full well that just building a site and “they will come” is just not true. Meaning: merely having valuable content, a great-looking site and interesting products and services is unfortunately far from being enough to make your site successful.

With billions of web pages out there competing with the pages on your own site for the same limited number of visitors, it just stands to reason that you are going to have to work to compete for that traffic in the online world.

Here are 5 tools to create traffic for a website that you should be using:

1. Keyword research tool:

The content that you create, both for your own website and for the back-linked content that resides off-site somewhere else (in articles, blogs, lenses and other websites), is going to need to be optimized for specific keywords. By properly optimizing your content for these target keywords, you have a much better chance of getting visits from people who are specifically searching for the content you offer.

But, how can you determine which keywords to target? Use a good keyword research tool. These tools will tell you not only how many people on average are searching for a given keyword each day, but also how many other websites are competing for the same keyword.

2. Article distribution tool:

One of the best ways to get traffic to your website is via backlinks from original content that you create that matches that of the topic or theme of your website. Articles, blogs and other content vehicles are a great way to accomplish getting more traffic to your site.

If you are writing articles and blog entries, you will want to get as many copies of each one out onto the Internet. Using an article distribution tool, you can save yourself the trouble of manually submitting that content to multiple sites, one after the other. Instead, just submit your content once via the tool and it will be automatically distributed to hundreds of other sites.

3. Video distribution tool:

Video continues to be one of the smartest, most cutting-edge ways to spread the word about your website. And, in terms of video hosting sites there is more than just YouTube out there! You can use a video distribution tool to distribute your video content to multiple top video sites at once for maximum exposure.

4. Website analysis tool:

In terms of your own website, you are going to want to see how it stacks up against the sites of your competitors. A website analysis tool will help you do just that. With such a tool, you can verify important information such as: which keywords show up with the highest frequency on the site, how many words are on a given page, and what type of meta tags are on each page. Based upon this information, you can make more informed optimization decisions.

5. Backlink checker tool:

Backlinks are one of the cornerstones of strong web rankings. Use a backlink checker to count how many links are leading back to your site (or to the sites of your competitors) from other sites. The more backlinks a site has, the better the chances that site will have for getting strong search engine site rankings for relevant keywords.

Look into these 5 important tools to create traffic for your website.

Warmth: A Necessity

If, for example, you built a home using wood, which is located in a place where there is a winter season, the need for heaters is a must. If you leave your hardwood flooring cold, in time, it will become brittle. Moreover, there is also a need to insulate your place, so that the temperature inside your home, where wood is exposed to will have a higher temperature compared to the temperature of the outside weather. In addition, warming accessories such as rugs, carpets and mats could also be of big help in protecting your hard wood flooring.

Aussies ignore flag ban at Big Day Out festival

Friday, January 26, 2007

Despite pleas from Big Day Out promoters to leave the national flag of Australia at home, many of the 55,000 music lovers have turned up to the Sydney event covered in it.

Co-promoter Ken West caused a stir when the flag was “banned” from this year’s Big Day Out in Sydney after organisers branded it a “gang colour” and symbol of hate. Organizers of the rock festival had planned to confiscate any flag or bandanna bearing the national symbol at the gate. The organizers defended their action claiming Sydney was “a hot bed of racism.” They had already moved the event from the traditional time, Australia Day, to avoid these “nationalistic overtones.” The Prime Minister John Howard responded by declaring that the Big Day Out should have been cancelled unless organisers reversed their decision to ban the flag.

After widespread outrage on talkback radio, and condemnation of their action by the Prime Minister and state Premiers, Australians have literally worn their hearts on their sleeves by draping the Aussie flag over their shoulders or wearing t-shirts, tattoos or bikinis with it printed on it. Event organisers allowed hundreds of fans to bring Australian flags to the event, backing down on their earlier call to leave the emblem at home.

Melissa-Rose Heap, 18-years-old, of Kogarah, said she and her friends had fashioned the Australian flag into dresses after the banning controversy.

“We made them into dresses because they said we weren’t allowed to, and that’s not right,” she said. “They shouldn’t be able to tell anyone that we can’t be proud of Australia.”

Hollywood sign modified to read ‘Hollyweed’

Correction — January 22, 2016 The vote on November 9 was of California voters, not the California legislature.

Tuesday, January 3, 2017

The Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, California was modified to read “Hollyweed” on Sunday. Security camera footage shows the perpetrator was dressed all in black, said Sergeant Robert Payan.

Christopher Garcia, a spokesperson of the Los Angeles Police Department, said the suspected male offender is being investigated for trespassing rather than vandalism. The sign was not physically damaged; the modification was done using black tarpaulins decorated with signs of peace and heart to alter the “O” to read lowercase “e”.

Betsy Isroelit, a Hollywood Sign Trust spokesperson said, “There was obviously recent legislation in California that may have inspired people. But to me, it looks more like a New Year’s Eve prank.” On November 9, legislators voted in favor of a ballot for legalising recreational use of marijuana in California for the age group of 21 and above.

Previously, on January 1, 1976, Daniel Finegood had vandalised the sign using curtains in a similar manner to read “Hollyweed”. As a college student, Finegood had modified the sign for an assignment in art class. Finegood, in 1990, had modified the sign again, signifying a political issue, modifying the sign to read “Oil War” to protest the Persian Gulf War.

The sign was vandalised in 1992 before the US presidential election. Supporters of presidential election candidate Ross Perot altered the sign to read “Perotwood”.

The law legalising recreational marijuana is due to come into effect in 2018.

Why Women Need Leather And Suede Jackets

By James Brooks

Leather jackets for women are probably a much more diverse affair than their male counterparts, spanning as they do the whole spectrum of formality, from the rough and ready tasselled biker jacket to chic and subtle evening wear. This wide range of styles has ensured the leather jacket has survived many a fashion renaissance and will probably go on fitting the bill whatever direction style takes. And for those girls who arent won over by leather, theres always the opportunity to be swayed by suede, leathers slightly more velvety cousin that brings a sensuality to the material while keeping its solid lines and ruggedness.

And just in case you were picturing a classic black, shiny leather or matt brown suede, its worth remembering that the colour palette of both takes in every imaginable colour, bookended by brilliant whites and jet blacks, and such a variety of finishes from glossy to matt that Dulux Paints cast envious glances in leathers direction.

Of course, as with any browse through the annals of style, youll come across some shockers in the leather jacket chapter. Designers have all too often accentuated leathers flashy lustre for all the wrong reasons, and the 1980s rears its ugly head quite noticeably in the leather department. The jackets of this era were often shapeless and unflattering, with loose, bulging waists tapering in around the thighs for a rugby ball silhouette that defies taste. Acres of unadorned leather would flap in the breeze, quite an achievement for a material as far removed from chiffon as is possible.

Leather and suede jackets for women are at their best when they are either minimally sized or decorated with details, or are a blend of both. And folds and pleats just look too skin-like in leather to have any claim to beauty. If youre looking for inspiration in a vintage clothing store, youll be able to see straight away which ones are working and which ones should be exported to Bavaria and converted into lederhosen.

A timelessly cool look is the not-quite biker or flying jacket. With some nods to the rugged origins of the leather jacket (perhaps an abundance of pockets or some fur collar lining), the well designed ones keep the look simple and stylish without going over the top. If they end above the waist, thats great for wearing with jeans, but some of the most feminine leather or suede jackets are the thigh-length numbers, so long as they are designed with a narrow (often belted) waist and subtly flaring lower half.

Or maybe you really dont care for remaining feminine and just want an honest to goodness leather jacket for the very reason that they defy time and, sometimes, refinement. If this sounds like you, youre going to be spoilt for choice. Accessorise away, beat it about a little and let it age gracelessly and youll let the world know youre no shrinking violet.

So what are you waiting for? Get your motor running
