Pichilemu and Cobquecura, Chile rocked again by aftershocks

Friday, March 26, 2010

Two medium intensity seisms were registered in Chile. These quakes are aftershocks of the March 11 Pichilemu earthquake. According to the University of Chile Geological Survey, the first one took place at 9:59 local time (13:59 UTC); its epicenter was located 17 kilometers northeast of Pichilemu, with a magnitude of 4.7. It lasted about ten seconds. The second aftershock had a magnitude of 5.1, and occurred at the 10:57 local time (14:57 UTC), with its epicenter located 15 kilometers north of Cobquecura.

The National Emergencies Office graded the scale of the seisms on the Mercalli scale, which attempts to quantify the amount of physical damage caused by an earthquake. The intensities of the smaller aftershock were determined to be V in Pichilemu, III in Talca and II in San Fernando, while the larger 5.1 magnitude earthquake only hit IV in Pichilemu, but registered a IV in Talca as well, due to its closer proximity to that city.

Thursday morning the Municipality of Pichilemu posted a letter via Facebook to all those affected by the February 27 and March 11 earthquakes in the surrounding areas of Pichilemu, like Ciruelos, Alto Ramírez, and others. However, they didn’t name the village of Espinillo. The mayor of Pichilemu, Roberto Córdova, was criticized for not giving aid to the village. Córdova responded that he was “doing his best to aid [the surrounding areas]. [The Municipality] is going to replace the [balustrades] destroyed by the 11 March earthquake,” and “these places are receiving the aid they require.”

Nothing honourable in honour killings, says Indian court

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

India’s Supreme Court has labelled honour killings a “slur on the nation,” and warned the death penalty will await those found guilty of the crime. The court finds “nothing honourable about honour killings.”

It is time to stamp out these barbaric, feudal practices which are a slur on the nation. This is necessary as a deterrent for such outrageous, uncivilised behaviour. All persons who are planning to perpetrate honour killings should know that gallows await them.

An independent study says each year an estimated 900 people are murdered in India for bringing dishonour to their families, usually by falling in love and marrying outside their caste or within their sub-caste. Honour killings, accepted as a cultural tradition in some parts of India, are normally punished with life imprisonment. But Justices Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Misra have now called for a tougher stance, directing courts throughout India to use capital punishment in their sentencing.

“It is time to stamp out these barbaric, feudal practices which are a slur on the nation. This is necessary as a deterrent for such outrageous, uncivilised behaviour. All persons who are planning to perpetrate honour killings should know that gallows await them,” Justice Katju said.

The crack-down came yesterday, as the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal to lessen the life imprisonment of Bhagwan Dass. The man strangled his married daughter to death with wire after discovering she was in an incestuous affair.

The Supreme Court also condemned the traditional village councils who endorse these honour killings and order them to be carried out.

How To Define A Space Using Your Furniture}

How to Define a Space Using Your Furniture

by

Alyssa Arnelle

Do you have one room in your house that’s randomly filled with furnishings because you have no idea what to make out of the room? Do you have more furniture than space or more space than furniture with nothing clearly defined? Well, there are many ways to create different spaces in a home and I’ll guide you through the process with some very creative design tips.

I’ll first tell you what it means to define a space and then give you some practical applications to put these design tips into good use.

“Defining your space” means creating “invisible” boundaries that act as walls around an area. It’s really not “invisible” because the space, when composed correctly, is very clear to see. It’s the “walls” that are invisible. For example, imagine a furniture show room. It’s all one big room with minimal walls yet, each “room” or setting is very easy to see.

Take that same idea and apply it to your home. Sure they use partitions, which are not very portable but there are plenty of other furnishings that you can use that are very portable just like they do.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI7jC57GuZM[/youtube]

Here’s an easy way to make a space. Choose a particular spot in your room and designate it as “center” and make sure to provide enough room for furnishings. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the center of the room, just the center of the space you want to create. Once you do so, position your furnishings around that point so they all face toward that “center” you chose. When done properly, everything will be in relation to each other and the center point.

You can place your furniture in a structured grid pattern, in a curved radial pattern, and even in a free-formed cluster pattern. As long as the furniture somehow relates to the center point you chose, you have created your new space correctly.

How to Use Furniture to Create Social Environments

The furniture and how it’s placed in your space is what gives your area shape and definition. To establish a social environment, group your furniture in sets of two or three or more, depending on your needs for the space. Angle the pieces at around 90 degrees as this makes a very comfortable place to socialize. For example, arrange your sofa and chair(s) or loveseat in an L-shape or U-shape configuration. You will now see that the backs of the furniture are the borders of the space.

Adding occasional tables for your functionality needs can be done as well. To create a height boundary, add table or floor lamps or plants. You can also use a wall hanging or window for this purpose if your space is near a wall.

Using an area rug in your space will lay out the perimeter as well. With the many shapes of rugs to choose from, you don’t always need to go square. But if you choose to use a rectangular rug, you can skew it to break up any monotony. Same goes for any piece of furniture in your space. So if you want something original, try putting one piece of furniture “out of place” (so to say.)

Using Furniture to Create Intimate Settings

How you place your furniture in an intimate setting is different than how you would in a social scene. You can use less furniture since this space will only to used by one or two people at a time. To create this intimate scene, place furniture in pairs.

For a setting for two, you can use two chairs and a small end table between. You can place this setting by a window, fireplace or other place of interest. Angling these pieces again at around 90 degree angles will make a very cozy environment.

For a single setting, you can use a chaise lounge or a chair and a small table for a lamp, picture frame or book. This again can be placed by any place of interest, i.e. outside on your patio or by a window in a sitting room. As long as the two pieces chosen are grouped next to each other, your cozy space will be clearly defined.

Again for this intimate space, you can use an area rug to create the outline on the floor. For a setting for two, use a square or round rug but remember to rotate the square rug for more creative flow. For the single setting, use a runner parallel to your chaise lounge or even a mat under the table or in front of the chair you choose.

Now you can see how easy it is to define a space with furniture, no matter what size room you have to work with. Keep these great design tips in mind and try a few the next time you want to change up your furniture arrangements.

Australia’s Channel Seven breaches children TV standards regulations by broadcasting McDonald’s advertisement

Thursday, September 15, 2011

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) ruled that Australia’s Channel Seven has broken television regulations by showing a 15-second McDonald’s advertisement during a children’s program.

The advertisement, a playground campaign, was shown 72 times in October and November 2010 during television broadcasts in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth.

The DDB ad agency and OMD media agency were involved in the campaign’s development.

The advertisement was marketed as a network promotion but did not feature Channel Seven. The ACMA ruled that the advertisement was for the restaurant as the footage included the golden arches, and characters Grimace and Hamburglar.

The campaign was filmed at Customs House in Sydney’s Circular Quay.

The 2009 Children’s Television Standards prohibits advertising during preschool viewing periods and restricts it during children’s viewing periods. ACMA chairman Chris Chapman said: “The ACMA remains serious about the protection of children during children’s programming, particularly given their vulnerability to forms of advertising that are not well signposted or have the potential to be unduly influential.” A Channel Seven Spokesman said, “We accept ACMA’s finding and are implementing steps as discussed with the regulator to improve our processes.”

McDonald’s has agreed with the ACMA about the placement of the advertisement. “McDonald’s Australia is extremely disappointed that the identifier was placed during C and P viewing periods,” a McDonald’s spokesperson stated to AdNews. “This advertisement was not produced by McDonald’s but was produced and placed by Channel Seven. … We take very seriously our commitment to responsible advertising where children are concerned.”

Channel Seven was not fined by the ACMA. The channel must implement a review process all non-program material that will be broadcast during P programs.

Final Harry Potter book goes on sale

Saturday, July 21, 2007

The final Harry Potter book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, has gone on sale today. The book was launched simultaneously across the world.

The book launched first in the UK, where the book went on sale from midnight. Fans in one central London bookshop started joining the queue from 10:30 p.m., which soon reached the door of the shop and out onto the street. The book chain Waterstone’s held ‘Harry Potter parties’, giving out free glasses of wine and snacks. The mood was good-natured and jolly, with some fans dressed up in costume.

New Zealand fans of the series had a launch time of 11.01 a.m. (NZST). Due to high competition among major retail chains, the book was being sold for as little as NZ$32.99 at Whitcoulls; a profit margin of four cents with each book sold. The recommended retail price was NZ$55.00. Many supermarkets in the UK cut prices even further as a publicity stunt with, for example, ASDA selling copies at a loss, at about 1/4 of the recommended retail price.

It was also an early release for Australian fans of the series, at 9.01 a.m. (Sydney). A Sydney Borders store had a line reaching out halfway across the street. In Brisbane City, Borders had a line from the shop, down the street and around the corner.

150 fans in New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, were waiting outside a Border’s bookstore at 8.00 a.m. to be some of the first to get their hands on a copy. A bookstore nearby, Dymocks, also had a large crowd, an estimated 100 people were waiting. One person arriving there at 6.30 a.m. At one New Zealand Whitcoulls store, they had a entertainer/magician keeping fans entertained while waiting for 11.01 a.m. In Germany, however, some bookshops were disappointed with the turnout for the Harry Potter book launch events.

The Harry Potter series has already sold 325 million copies worldwide. 1.3 million of those were sold in New Zealand, a quarter of New Zealand’s population. The Wikipedia article on the latest book became disabled for editing by unregistered and newly registered users within 5 minutes of the book’s release.

Bush’s Katrina statement contradicted by emerging evidence

Thursday, March 2, 2006

Recently emerging evidence seems to contradict a statement by United States President George W. Bush during Hurricane Katrina. He stated in an interview with ABC on September 1st that, “I don’t think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees”.

One of the first items to emerge, a video obtained by the Associated Press, shows footage of Bush during a video-conference received at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, on August 29, 2005, 19 hours before landfall of Hurricane Katrina. During the briefing, Director of the National Hurricane Center Max Mayfield warned, “I don’t think anyone can tell you with any confidence right now whether levees will be topped or not, but there is obviously a very, very great concern”.

In addition, Michael D. Brown, then director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), reported that he had spoken with President Bush twice in the morning and that the president was asking about reports that the levees had been breached.

Brown would state later on CNN that, “There’s no question in my mind he probably had those reports (about breaches in the levees), because we were feeding in the Homeland Security Operations Center, into the White House sit room, all of the information that we were getting. So he had to have had that information. Plus, I think the president knew from our earlier conversations that that was one of my concerns, that the levees could actually breach”.[1]

In July 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency completed an exercise called “Hurricane Pam”, which, dealt with the scenario of a direct hit on New Orleans by a hurricane with 120 mph winds (a Category 3). It resulted in “10 to 20 feet of water within the City of New Orleans,” according to January 24 congressional testimony by the president of the company that designed the Hurricane Pam exercise.[2]

A report FEMA sent to the White House Situation Room on August 29th, they cited death and destruction anticipated by the “Hurricane Pam” exercise and warned that Katrina was likely to be worse. “Exercise projection is exceeded by Hurricane Katrina real-life impacts,” they stated. Furthermore, “The potential for severe storm surge to overwhelm Lake Pontchartrain levees is the greatest concern for New Orleans. Any storm rated Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson (hurricane) scale will likely lead to severe flooding and/or levee breaching. This could leave the New Orleans metro area submerged for weeks or months”.[3]

When the report was released, Hurricane Katrina was thought to be a Category 4 as of landfall (though after analysis, it’s power at landfall would be downgraded to a Category 3).[4]

White House officials previously clarified Bush’s earlier comment, saying that the president was referring to the hours after Katrina swept through and news reports as of August 30th suggested the city had “dodged a bullet”, which led to surprise when reports reached them of the levee breaches.[5][6] Contrasting this was the August 30th broadcast of NBC’s Today, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams reported at 7:05 a.m. ET, “There has been a huge development overnight … the historic French Quarter, dry last night and it is now filling with water. This is water from nearby Lake Pontchartrain; the levees failed overnight.”[7]

Polish exercise book advertisement copies Wikipedia content, violates copyright

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Friday, October 24, 2008

On August 21, the Polish weekly Przekrój published an advertisement for Dan-Mark exercise books, bearing the logo of 4fun.tv, a Polish music/interactive TV station. Part of the advertisement contained a definition of the word “exercise book”. The wording looked familiar, and Wikinews consulted Wikipedia, the collaborative online encyclopedia.

Upon seeing the Wikipedia definition, it appeared that the entry quoted in the promotional material was identical to the initial two paragraphs of the relevant Wikipedia entry.

Freelance reporters for the Polish Wikinews decided to find out the reason for such a similarity and whether either of the texts (the advertisement’s or Wikipedia’s) might be a case of copyright violation.

The reporters contacted a Jaros?aw Janas, Creative Director of 4fun.tv., where the ad appeared. His reply included the following claim:

The text of the definition has been taken from an encyclopedic publication which is older than 50 years and therefore not subject to copyright protection. The fact of coincidental similarity cannot be considered equal to plagiarism, because as we all know Wikipedia is a place which publishes texts and definitions that have already existed in different forms in other publications released before.

Copyright on text does not last for fifty years as claimed by Janas, but for 70 years after the death of the author.

To investigate the authenticity of the above claims, Wikinews asked the main author of the two paragraphs in question, Wikipedian Julo, about the sources used to write the entry. He confirmed that he had written the text in question, and not copied it from an encyclopedic publication as claimed by Jana.

It is therefore impossible that both Julo and the people responsible for the exercise book advertisement have used the same uncopyrighted encyclopedia, thus coincidentally creating identical texts. The reporters also noted that the first draft of the introduction to the article was written by WaldemarWolskiHuta (February 2006). Afterward the text had undergone some modifications by Julo (September 2006), as well as Picus viridis and Beno (March 2008). However, the text presented in the press promotional material, which – according to 4fun.tv – came from an old-print encyclopedia is identical to the Wikipedia entry after the changes mentioned above had been made. Julo added that he was still alive, together with the other authors of the article in question who constituted the group of the copyright co-holders. This naturally led to a conclusion that neither 50 nor 70 years could have passed since their death. He left 4fun.tv’s actions with a comment that although the contents he and the other Wikimedians had made public and free, they are far from making them available in any “free style”, but under a specified license.

In follow up messages to Jaros?aw Janas, Wikinews reporters confronted the creative director over his seemingly inaccurate claims.

Wikinews was told in a reply that 4fun.tv would ignore the claims unless they see permission from the author of the original content to investigate this story. They were also informed that further e-mails without any specifics sent by the reporter would be qualified as spam. 4fun.tv’s creative director further added that he found the reporter’s picture on the Internet and asked how the person would feel if this picture was to appear on billboards or press releases that advertised the TV station.

Wikipedia does allow copying of its content under certain conditions. The encyclopedia’s content is released under the GNU Free Documentation License, which means that it can be copied, modified, and used commercially and non-commercially – under the conditions that the license’s text is included with the copied content and the five main authors are mentioned. If a part of the article is used, like in the example quoted in this news story, a “right to quote”, recognized by Polish law, may be used. In such a case it suffices to mention the source of the text (Polish Wikipedia) and the author of the excerpt. 4fun.tv met none of these conditions, meaning that copyright has been violated.

Over a year ago Polish Wikinews reported on a similar problem, regarding the use of free-licensed photographs. Since that time such “borrowings” have become less frequent, however photos are still being used in discordance with the license. Journalists have gotten used to citing sources, e.g. Wikipedia, although licensing conditions require attributing the actual author, not the source. So instead of attributing John Doe for his contribution, agencies like Polska Agencja Prasowa (Polish Press Agency) are attributing the source, Wikipedia.

In early September 2008 a similar situation occurred in relation to the Polish edition of Wiktionary. Gazeta Wyborcza, a Polish daily, published an IKEA advertisement, on the opening page of which an almost word-for-word Wiktionary entry was placed; additionally the advertisement used the characteristic MediaWiki layout. The reference to the external source used was missing.

In April 2008, an example of an Australian professor was cited; the scientist, in a reply to a news story, quoted a Wikipedia definition almost word-for-word. The same professor condemned the use of Wikipedia in his previous press appearances.

In 2005 Wikipedia material was discovered in the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel, which acknowledged its fault and published appropriate apologies in place of the article in the online edition.

Frontline magazine in 2007 was found using an image from Wikipedia without proper credit. When pointed out the magazine acknowledged the failing and a correction was promptly given in the subsequent issue.
