Volunteers collaborate in reconstruction of Lolol, Chile

Saturday, May 22, 2010

Today, the day of the National Monuments of Chile, a group of volunteers from Santiago travelled to Lolol, a town located in O’Higgins Region. Lolol, named National Monument of Chile in October 2003, was severely damaged after the major February earthquake; the Church of the town, widely known as one of the oldest in Chile, is currently being restored.

“Their attitude is a clear sample of the conscience and love of the Chileans with their legacy, patrimony, especially after the earthquake,” said the Executive Clerk of the National Monuments Council of Chile, Óscar Acuña, who appreciated their collaboration.

Previously, 35 students of Tourism in the Technical Formation Center of the Los Leones Institute, were working in Lolol, between April 30 and May 1, helping to clean up the damage caused by the earthquake.

The famous musical group, Bafona, also visited Lolol, and a few other towns that were damaged by the earthquake.

Home of controversial book publisher set ablaze

Four people have been arrested on terrorism charges in Islington, London, England, after a suspected petrol bombing on the house of Martin Rynja, owner of book publishing company Gibson Square.

His company recently sparked controversy after buying the rights to publish The Jewel of Medina, a work of fiction by Sherry Jones depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad and his child bride, Aisha.

The bombing, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, led to the evacuation of the £2.5 million property in Lonsdale Square. Three men, aged 22, 30 and 40, were arrested at 2:25am BST by armed officers, two in Lonsdale Square, and one after being stopped near Angel tube station.

Police comments suggested that the trio had been under surveillance, and that they had advance knowledge of the plot and simply waited for the arsonists to strike, before arresting them.

On Saturday, a woman was arrested for obstructing police during their searches of four addresses – two in Walthamstow, and two in Ilford and Forest Gate.

Speaking earlier this month, Mr Rynja said that “The Jewel of Medina has become an important barometer of our time. As an independent publishing company, we feel strongly that we should not be afraid of the consequences of debate.” Ms Jones commented that she did not intend for her novel to be offensive to Islam. She noted that she “[has] deliberately and consciously written respectfully about Islam and Muhammad.” She “envisaged that [her] book would be a bridge builder” between Islam and the western world.

On December 2, the Toronto city council voted in favor of banning the sales and distribution of bottled water on city property. The council also agreed to provide public drinking fountains on their properties, as well as on a measure that would make shoppers pay at least five Canadian cents for plastic grocery bags and force business owners to offer reusable bags and carry-out containers.

“Toronto’s decision to ban the bottle and turn on the tap sends a clear message that bottled water’s 15 minutes are up,” said Polaris Institute’s campaign coordinator, Joe Cressy.

All of the city’s facilities should be following the water ban by 2011, while businesses will have to implement their bag fees by 2010. Toronto has become the largest city in the world to ban bottled water on government property.

On Tuesday, American actor, Patrick Swayze, who suffers from pancreatic cancer, denied reports that he was near death. American tabloid National Inquirer reported on November 28 that Swayze’s cancer had spread to his liver and that he was preparing for his death.

“The only thorn in my side being that many tabloids have been consistently reporting lies and false information about me and those close to me,” said Swayze in a statement to the press who also added that he knows he is in “the fight for his life,” but that it is a fight that he “is winning.”

“I’m one of the lucky few that responds well to treatment,” added Swayze.

Swayze has starred in over a dozen films, including the 1987 hit film Dirty Dancing.

How To Find Best Company For Managed It Services

How To Find Best Company For Managed IT Services

by

Gregory J. Peppers

The term managed IT services is an umbrella term that denotes many things. The services that come under this category range from fixing of simple computer hardware problems to managing the network and database. The IT support company should be able to function as the virtual IT department of the company.

But how many managed IT services companies can function as the offshore IT department of another firm? The answer is not many. Time is an issue, geographical separation is another. The business model of the IT support services is also a constraint. Here are a few tips to find the right IT support company. Do you need IT support? This is perhaps the first question you should answer before hiring a managed IT services company. Theoretically, all kinds of businesses should have IT support in some format. The internet and computers offer opportunities in business promotion and improving staff efficiency. There are two kinds of situations in which IT support is mandatory. The first is to solve the existing IT-related problems. It can be hardware problems, software issues, or networking bottlenecks. The second is to ensure that an organization exploits and leverages the full potential and power of IT to maximize business and productivity. Most small and medium level businesses, if not all, require one of the two above-mentioned supports. If you belong to this category, the next thing you should do is to choose a good company. The problem is how to figure out whether a company is good or bad. Choosing the right IT support services company is more important than what most people think. It can make or break a business. The following are some tips choose the right firm. Time and space The internet is said to make time and space obsolete. But that has not happened yet – certainly not in managed IT services. Suppose you have simple network breakdown. Remote support might be readily available. But what if the problem is with some hardware parts? A support engineer has to come and rectify the problem. The nearer the computer tech support firm is, the quicker the support arrives. So, if you are from South Florida, it is better to choose a network services South Florida firm. At least the firm has a permanent office and staff at your locality. Reputation Reputation is a hard-earned thing in the field of computer tech support and network support. The longer a firm works, the better reputation it achieves. It is also worth checking the opinion other businesses have about a Network Services South Florida firm. Versatility One problem with the smaller companies that offer managed services in IT is that they do not offer all kinds of IT support services. A versatile managed IT services firm should offer the following: ? Hardware support ? Network support ? Software-related support ? Cloud computing support ? Data backup support ? Data security and internet security support. It is better to hire a single company for all these services than choosing individual companies. Reliability The credibility of the managed services firm is also an issue. Instances of data theft are not too uncommon on the internet. Ensure that a firm is reliable and credible before hiring it for managed IT services.

Connections for Business is one of the longest-serving

network services South Florida

firm. It was started in 1976 as a computer and software support firm. It now offers a variety of

managed IT services

, including hardware and network support, data security services, and internet support.

Grand National winning horse ‘Comply or Die’ dies, aged 17

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

Comply or Die, the racehorse who won the 2008 Grand National has died at the age of 17. His death was announced by his former trainer, David Pipe. He died over at the weekend in Gloucestershire, where he had been staying with jockey Timmy Murphy. He was cremated on Monday and his ashes will return to Murphy.

Murphy was the jockey in the saddle when Comply or Die won the 2008 Grand National. Speaking to the Press Association, he spoke about the horse’s death. He said, “He was part of the furniture at home so it’s very sad. He gave me the greatest day of my career, obviously that can never be taken away. He paraded at Cheltenham and Aintree and was getting ready to do some dressage in the summer. I’m not actually sure how he died, to be honest, but it wasn’t nice to come home to. He was cremated on Monday. He was a happy horse and he was also very clever.”

During his racing career he made £798,809 in prize-money after winning a total of eight races.

The 2008 Grand National victory was his greatest achievement and he almost matched it when he came second place in 2009. He retired in 2011 but remained active, often being paraded at race grounds such as Aintree and Cheltenham. He also participated in some hunting activities. Pipe said, “Since his retirement he had been a lead-horse at Timmy Murphy’s establishment before trying his hand at dressage, a discipline in which he had proven very successful”.

Tributes have been paid to Comply or Die on social media by horse racing fans with several tweeting their appreciation and memories.

Canadian annual seal hunt begins amid controversy

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, opened the Canadian seal hunt amid protests by animal rights groups, at a time when bans on seal product imports are becoming more prevalent internationally.

Seal hunters along the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence are allowed to catch a maximum of 270,000 Harp Seal pups from a total estimated population of 5.5 million. 8,200 is the allowable catch of Hooded seals from an estimated population of 600,000, and seal hunters may catch 50,000 grey seals from an approximate population of 300,000.

The Harp seal pups may be killed as soon as they have molted their white pelts, which occurs 10 to 21 days after birth.

It is reported that Russia has shut down the seal hunt on its shores. The United States, Netherlands, and Belgium ban the import of seal products. The European Parliament committee has endorsed a ban on seal product imports by the 27 European Union (EU) member states, in the form of a proposed bill that would still allow the Canadian Inuit to trade in seal products for first nation cultural purposes. All members of the EU must approve the bill for it to become law.

“While we are extremely disappointed that the European Parliament has called for a ban of the trade of seal products, our position remains that any ban on a humanely conducted hunt, such as Canada’s, is completely without merit. We will continue to explore all legal and diplomatic options and we will exercise our rights to their fullest extent under international trade laws if and when it becomes necessary and appropriate.”

“Sealing is a significant source of income in many small, isolated coastal communities throughout Atlantic Canada, Quebec and the North, and creates critical employment opportunities for processing plants, as well as fuel, food and equipment suppliers in coastal communities,” said Minister Shea.

“Our government will continue to defend the rights of Canadian sealers to provide a livelihood for their families through our humane, responsible and sustainable hunt,” she said. “It represents as much as 35 per cent of a sealer’s annual income and is important for thousands of families at a time of year when other fishing options are limited at best.”

The first area to open up to the seal hunt was the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where 30 percent of the catch is allowed.

Sixteen observer permits have been issued. “The majority of the observers are people who protest against the seal hunt, but there are journalists and other observers as well. We try to make sure there’s an even proportion of sealing activity and observer activity,” Mr. Jenkins, Department of Fisheries and Oceans spokesman said. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is going to observe and record the commercial seal hunt.

“It’s devastating to be here, to know the commercial seal hunt has started again. It’s clear that a change is on the horizon with the European Parliament voting on a proposal to ban seal-product trade in the EU and many people in the Canadian sealing industry believe that could spell the beginning of the end of the commercial seal hunt,” commented Rebecca Aldworth, director of the Canadian chapter of Humane Society International.

GWAR announce Dave Brockie arts foundation

Saturday, April 12, 2014

The surviving members of satirical metal band GWAR yesterday announced a charitable arts foundation in the name of Dave Brockie. Brockie, 50, died last month.

Founding frontman and singer Brockie spent 30 years leading “Earth’s only openly extra-terrestrial rock band”, which actually hailed from Richmond, Virginia. Their obscene lyrics and theatrical live shows brought fame to Brockie, who went by stage name Oderus Urungus, and the fellow Virginia Commonwealth University art students that made up the band.

GWAR unveiled the foundation in a video statement yesterday. Amongst the stated aims are providing support to artists who cannot acquire funds via traditional routes and “the advancement of music, images, letters and performances in the arts”. The foundation is also to preserve Brockie’s body of work and promote his legacy.

“We would like to thank fans and friends for their outpouring of love”, the band said.

A public memorial for Brockie is scheduled for August 15, and the annual GWAR-B-Q is to go ahead the next day. Drawing a line between the stage persona and the man who played it, the band add “Just face it — Oderus would order you to be present and pay tribute to Dave Murray Brockie, his own personal slave!”

Donations can be made at the GWAR-B-Q and via GWAR’s website. The rubber-costumed band remains to publicly decide if they will continue to perform and record. They say the foundation’s first task will be to fund and erect a monument “to provide the world with a place to pay respects to the memory of a very cherished man”.

Key Performance Indicators To Track The Health Of Your Business

By Peter Holtz, CPA

Small business owners should develop key performance indicators as a way to track, measure, and improve their business. It is one of the most effective ways to know exactly where you stand.

These indicators can help the small business owner focus on what’s important to their business and can serve as a measuring tool to track the progress towards of business goals.

Through a gap analysis, the business owner can get a clearer picture between where he is and where he wants his business to be. There are other measuring tools like balance scorecards and results based management, but key performance indicators are simple to develop and track, so they are easy to use in measuring business performance.

Key performance indicators measure what you have decided are your business success factors. Each business needs to develop its own KPI’s, because there are no two businesses exactly alike.

There is so much information available these days, through Google analytics and other statistical resources, that it is easy to get lost in the numbers.

Key performance indicators can be grouped as follows:

— Output KPIs measure the financial and nonfinancial results of business operations. A few examples would be “Sales,” ‘Gross margin,’ ‘Net Profit,’ and “Number of new clients acquired.”

— Input KPIs measure assets and resources invested in or used to generate business outcomes. Examples include ‘Investment made in new training materials,’ “Funds invested on new equipment,” or “Funds allotted towards the expansion of the business facility.’

— Process KPIs measure the efficiency of business processes. Examples include ‘Number of hours to return incoming phone calls,’ ‘Hours or days to perform a service or deliver a product’ and ‘Weeks to fully train a new employee.’

There are potentially dozens of KPIs that can be identified in any business but the goal is to select those measures that deliver the most value.

Here are some criteria to keep in mind as you go about deciding what are the right KPI’s for your business:

— Accountable: KPIs will only contribute to better performance if they are linked to an individual or team unit that is clearly responsible for the KPI.

— Quantifiable: Ideally measures should be quantifiable so that they can be summarized and

viewed objectively.

— Relevance: Measures should be identified that clearly support the bigger goals and objectives of the business.

— Timely: For KPIs to be effective in informing decision making, they need to be prepared

and reported at such a frequency that supports the particular measure concerned

e.g. audience research on a weekly basis.

— Verifiable: The data used to calculate KPIs should be verifiable both in terms of its accuracy

and appropriateness for purpose.

— Cost effective to collect: There is always a cost associated with tracking and measuring a KPI. The cost and effort required to compile and report a KPI needs to be weighed up against the value it can deliver.

KPI’s make it easy to identify trends, spot problems, and focus on important financial and non-financial issues. They are concise, easy to understand, and help you monitor the health of your business. No business should operate without them.
