Write-in candidate leads in Buffalo, New York mayor election

Thursday, November 4, 2021

In a mayoral election held Tuesday in Buffalo, New York, United States, votes tallied as “write-ins” led the race over Democratic Party challenger India Walton 59 percent to 41 percent, with all precincts’ votes reported.

The city’s four-term incumbent mayor, Byron Brown, did not secure the nomination in its earlier Democratic primary election to be placed on the general election ballot, but led an extensive write-in candidate campaign against his fellow Democrat. Walton’s name was the only one printed on the ballots in the general election for the mayoral race.

On Wednesday, the democratic socialist Walton conceded the race to Brown. In a statement posted to Twitter, Walton wrote, “However, while we anticipate that the margins will narrow, it seems unlikely that we will end up with enough votes to inaugurate a Walton administration in January”, adding, “This was a special campaign. Our volunteer operation was unprecedented in Buffalo political history. We raised over one million dollars from thousands upon thousands of small dollar donors.”

Brown’s campaign distributed thousands of stamps for his supporters to apply his name to their ballots. After the election, Brown rebuked Walton’s post-election statement. He said to CNN on Thursday, “I think it clearly is a rebuke of defund the police, it is a rebuke of socialism, and I think there were those from outside the city of Buffalo that underestimated the Buffalo community. They tried to come in and tell us who to vote for, and the people fought back, and we won”.

Ballot counting is expected to be a slow process while the local elections board for Erie County tallies the votes from the handwritten names on the ballots. Under state law, officials have 25 days to tabulate and release a certified vote count.

The Erie County district attorney’s office said it was investigating alleged tampering by poll inspectors, who may have produced pre-stamped ballots. A statement read, “Our office was contacted by the Board of Elections to investigate an allegation that poll workers may have misused a stamp at one polling location yesterday. We cannot comment further while the matter remains under investigation.” According to Erie County elections commissioners Ralph Mohr and Jeremy Zellner, the inspectors suspected of tampering were removed and replaced at the polling place.

Magnet Technology And Health Care

Most people have a basic understanding of what a magnet is, but don’t really contemplate the many ways in which magnets can be used. Did you know that magnets play important roles in our everyday lives? Without magnet technology, our cell phones, computers, and even many automobiles would cease to function. Magnet technology has come a long way in the last few decades, but some of the most amazing advances have occurred in the field of health care.X-ray technology has been around for over 100 years. Many of us are familiar with the process of having x-rays taken, and we have all seen doctors look at x-ray images. In 1977, through the use of magnets, a new medical technology was developed as an alternative to (or an advanced version of) the x-ray. The technology was first called Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, but later became more commonly called Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI. MRI technology utilizes a powerful magnetic field to visualize the structure and functions in the human body. Unlike an x-ray, which can only depict a two dimensional image, MRI evaluates the body three dimensionally, allowing more careful evaluation and study of the body. These systems are used a great deal in the field of oncology or diagnosis of cancer.Though MRI technology is relatively new, only 30 years old, it has already become a very important a diagnostic tool. There are now mobile MRI units carried in specialized semi trailer trucks that travel to service rural areas. For those rural hospitals that cannot afford their own MRI unit, they can schedule the mobile MRI semi truck to visit on a somewhat regular basis so that doctors in the area can schedule patients to have an MRI as needed. The magnetic field created by an MRI machine is so strong that lead lined walls are used in the semi trailer to prevent the magnets from pulling automobiles off the road and into the side of the vehicle. In some other exploratory areas of medicine, magnets are now being used for pain reduction and healing. Some doctors and medical researchers believe magnet therapy is a better alternative than drugs or surgery, because there are no potentially harmful side effects or long recovery time. Whether or not magnet therapy really works is a hotly debated topic. Many testimonials have been recorded from satisfied patients. Is the relief real or only in the minds of the patients? Time will tell, as current research continues to evaluate the ability of magnet technology to reduce pain and enhance the natural healing process of the body.Interestingly enough, magnets have been used in health care for hundreds of centuries. The old recorded history of magnets being used for medicinal purposes is traced back to Africa, where a magnetite mine has been discovered. The mine, which is believed to be over 100,000 years old, was a major source of magnetite for medicinal purposes. The magnetite was ground up and used in topical ointments, potions, and foods for health purposes. In Eastern medicine, magnets have been used since 600 B.C. to reduce pain, much in the same way as acupuncture. Magnets were placed on specific points of the body called meridian channels, so as to improve blood flow and reduce pain. From a holistic medicine standpoint, magnets are a good alternative to traditional Western medicines because they provide a non-invasive treatment option. Many Asian cultures believe that magnets can be used to promote and enhance overall well-being and health.Modern medicine has come a long way in its use of magnet technology, and new discoveries continue to be made about what magnets can do for us. There is no question that the future will continue to bring new advancements in the medicinal uses of magnet technology.

Japanese tsunami impacts California coastal town

Sunday, March 13, 2011

The tsunami caused by Japan’s magnitude 8.9 quake on Friday destroyed the commercial fishing harbor of Crescent City, California, a coastal town still recovering from a devastating tsunami in 1964. Although most of the fishing boats were removed in advance, the 198 docking slips that the harbor had provided for boats, enabling the livelihoods of the fishing crews, were lost.

Harbormaster Richard Young said that the harbor is destroyed. “We’re facing not only physical but financial disaster,” he said during a briefing. “Our business activity came to a screeching halt yesterday, and that affects the entire community.” Councilwoman Kelly Schellong said, “This is going to have a trickle-down effect beyond the lost jobs.”

Crescent City’s unemployment rate was 13 percent before Friday’s tsunami destroyed its commerical fishing industry.

The 1964 tsunami that hit Crescent City killed 11, demolished the harbor and heavily damaged large portions of the business district. Although the city subsequently rebuilt, another tsunami again damaged the harbor in 2006. The city was in the midst of reconstructing the harbor when Friday’s tsunami hit. The harbor is surrounded by land and a breakwater built after the 1964 disaster. The tsunami’s huge waves entered through a small opening provided for the entrance and exit of boats.

Lori Dengler, director of the Humboldt Earthquake Education Center, says Friday’s tsunami was one of as many as 38 tsunamis to strike Crescent City within the last 78 years. She calls the city a “tsunami magnet” because of the topography of the ocean floor that contributes to its vulnerability. She also blames the breakwater built after the 1964 tsunami because it traps tsunami waves in the harbor, causing them to boil and churn.

A county supervisor found the view painful on Saturday as she surveyed the wreckage accompanied by state officials. She is hoping they will provide emergency assistance. “We don’t have the financial resources,” she said. “We need money. That’s what it takes to fix things…. Our poor little harbor.”

Ex-US soldier sentenced to life in prison for Iraqi teen rape, four murders

Saturday, September 5, 2009

A former US soldier has been sentenced to life in prison for raping a teen and murdering her and her family while on active duty in Iraq. The jury failed to reach the unanimous verdict required for the death penalty sought by the prosecution.

[…] if I had never gone to Iraq I would never have got caught up in anything like this

According to testimony given by two soldiers, Steven Dale Green was part of a group who decided they wanted to rape a girl they had seen walking through her village, 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi. They walked to her house while disguised as insurgents and separated her from her parents and younger sister.

Green then shot dead Abeer’s family while two other soldiers raped the girl. He then raped her himself while she wept before covering her face with a pillow and fatally shooting her. The gang then covered her naked body with a blanket soaked in kerosene, using a lighter to start a fire before walking 200 yards to a nearby checkpoint where they cooked a meal.

Green had already been discharged from the army when his crimes were discovered. He had previously spoken of a desire to murder Iraqi civilians and his defence argued he should never have been allowed to return to duty. A nurse had decided he would not carry out his desires. A US civilian court tried him, the first such prosecution of a soldier under a law allowing servicemen to be charged with crimes carried out abroad.

The judge described his actions as “unimaginable, unjustified and inexcusable” and sentenced him to five consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole. Four others had already been sentenced. Three are all serving life with parole after ten years, and a fourth who acted as a lookout is serving a 27-month sentence.

It took months for the offences to be discovered, even though Green had quickly confessed to a sergeant. Soldiers speaking to stress counsellors talked of the crimes after the abduction and murders of two other soldiers. When news of the soldiers’ actions broke, insurgents killed several American servicemen in revenge.

The prosecution described Green as “criminal and perverse” while the defence called him a “broken warrior.” Green said he was acting upon orders from former Specialist Paul Cortez, another of the attackers, and told the court “Y’all can act like I’m a psychopath or a sexual predator or whatever. But if I had never gone to Iraq I would never have got caught up in anything like this.”

The Importance Of Commercial Pool Service In Sacramento Ca

byadmin

There are more than 300,000 public swimming pools in the United States, visited by more than 300 million people over the age of six every year. That is a lot of swimming. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), nearly one in eight pool inspections identified serious violations resulting in pool closures and more than one-tenth of pool inspections identified disinfectant violations. With numbers like these it’s easy to see the benefits of hiring a Commercial Pool Service Sacramento CA.

The spread of Recreational Water Illness (RWI) is a priyears, there has been a significant outbreak of RWIs associated with swimming. Cryptosporidium, or crypto for short, can live for days even in treated pools because of its tolerance to chlorine. To avoid these issues, commercial pool operators need to be aware of the following:

 • Filtration -; Swimming pool filters are necessary pieces of equipment needed to keep swimming pools clean. Critical to ensuring the water’s cleanliness are proper filtration and circulation. A swimming pool’s circulation system is made up of a pump, pump strainer, skimmer, drains, and filter. Together they work to ensure the chemicals are working effectively and that the water is filtered appropriately.
 • Probe Fouling -; A thin coating can develop on the ORP probes surface from the build up of contaminants such as body lotions and oils, sweat, and mucous discharge from a swimmer’s nostrils. The buildup of contaminants reduces the effectiveness of the probes ability to detect chlorine levels in the water. Automatic cleaning systems help keep the ORP probes clear of coatings and contaminants. These are especially suited for the heavy use commercial swimming pools receive. Click here for more details.
 • Sanitation -; Maintaining proper levels of sanitation is critical to commercial swimming pools due to their number of swimmers. Typical of commercial swimming pools are highs and lows of sanitizer levels due to the variance of swimmer loads. Sanitizer levels that are either too high or too low may result in pool closure by the local health department, resulting in a loss of revenue and potentially causing damage to the pool’s equipment.

There is a lot at stake regarding the care of commercial swimming pools. Many commercial pool managers consider hiring a Commercial Pool Service Sacramento CA, well worth the investment. One such company is Geremia Pools, with over five decades of expert service, they offer customized services for any size facility.

Deadly illegal sexual enhancement products appear on the Singaporean market

Friday, April 11, 2008

New ‘deadly’ sexual enhancement products have been found in Singaporean markets and can cause serious side effects on users.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) announced the presence of the illegal drugs, known as Power 1 Walnut, Santi bovine penis erecting capsule, Zhong Hua Niu Bian and fake Cialis, which have been discovered over the past 3 months. Santi bovine penis erecting capsule has been found to contain high amounts of glibenclamide, a potent drug used to treat diabetes. The tablets also contain sildenafil and tadalafil – potent western medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction. Zhong Hua Niu Bian also contains sildenafil and glibenclamide.

High consumption of the tablets can be potentially deadly as the glibenclamide in the capsules can lead to drastically reduced blood sugar levels which can lead to seizures, stroke, coma or death. Consuming half of a Power 1 Walnut capsule has led to unconsciousness and frothing at the mouth.

Consumption of Power 1 Walnut has led to the death of a middle age man last week who fell into a coma. Currently, one death and two cases of coma have been reported from the total of 89 hospitalised cases linked with the consumption of the illegal drugs. It has been revealed that patients obtained the drugs by purchasing them from illegal peddlers located in various parts of Singapore.

The HSA has advised people to stop consuming the drugs and to report on any cases of consumption to them.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. Explosion at earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant

Saturday, March 12, 2011

An explosion has been reported at Japan’s stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after its cooling system was damaged by a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit off the North-East coast of Japan on Friday. The explosion occurred at around 3:00pm local time (6:00am UTC). According to the plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, four workers were injured in the explosion.

The explosion occurred as workers were attempting to cool a reactor by injecting water into its core. Local media are reporting that the plant’s exterior walls have been destroyed and only a skeleton structure remains.

More than 45,000 residents within a 10-kilometre radius of the plant have been evacuated.

Television reports show white smoke coming from the plant. Local authorities are warning residents in the vicinity of the plant to stay indoors, turn off air-conditioners and not to drink tap water. According to Japan’s nuclear agency, radioactive caesium and iodine has been identified at the plant. Authorities speculate that this indicates that containers holding uranium fuel at the site may have ruptured and are leaking.

Childhood And Teen Aging: From Bean Bag Toss To Crushes

By William U. Steinmetz

About a quarter of our lives is spent on pre-adulthood years, but these are the 18 most crucial years of human development. People, unlike animals do not only develop physically, but mentally, emotionally, socially and psychologically as well. This is why, unlike the animal species, typical laws of nature do not apply to us, save for the really fundamental ones like eating, sleeping, breathing etc.

The point is, there is more to human beings than their biological makeup. While it may be an impossible feat to dissect all there is to this complicated organism, there are at least some points of commonalities for all men in the stages of their growth.

Mans growth and development may be divided into three major categories, the childhood, adolescent and adulthood. Everything else may fall in between these stages or may serve as the boundaries, the threshold of crossing from one stage to the next. While most of the years are lived by man as an adult, the small quarter of his life spent as a child and an adolescent is actually the most crucial one in his development. It is where most of mans foundational character develops and are thus referred to as the growth years of man.

During childhood, which is typically from age 5 to 10, its the physical aspect in man that is growing at a fast rate. At this point, the person should have already ideally developed basic locomotive skills like walking and moving his or her hands, thus during childhood this develops more along with the growth and strengthening of his or her body parts. In line with this, the child who should be in school must also start developing his or her mental capabilities. This can be done with subjects like basic math, basic language skills, basic arts and crafts and etc. More importantly, what signifies childhood from all the other stages is the concept of play.

While playing in the adult stages may take the form of recreational sports, childhood holds a less serious type of playing and more an area to expend their creative and explosive energies. Of course underlying these games are also many aids to developing their locomotive skills and their mental agility. For example games such as the bean bag toss where not only are they to throw corn hole bags but also figure out strategies to increase their scoring. The bean bag toss is just one of the games that achieve this underlying development of mental and physical agility.

The next stage of human development, which is the adolescent stage or in layman terms, the teenage years, elevates to a more complicated type of development. While it may no longer be the stage for bean bag toss, this stage has now more on the psychological development of the teen, in accordance with the development of his bodily hormones. This stage is signified with the change in a persons perception of the opposite sex. They begin to recognize that this is the stage where the opposite sex is someone who can more than be a friend.

English hard rock band The Darkness reunites

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

The Darkness, a musical group of the hard rock genre based in England, has made the decision to reunite. They have been separated since 2006.

I think it should be a new phase and that should be extended to the clothing. Not a lesser phase, if anything a cranked up version. They’ll be more good.

The group are reportedly to perform at the upcoming Download Festival, which is due to occur in June of this year. The four members are anticipated to proceed recording a new album during the months of April and May 2011.

Speaking on Twitter, Justin Hawkins, a singer in the group, expressed his “[t]hanks for all the lovely messages of support” from supporters. “I’m gobsmacked and overwhelmed by all the positivity in and around The Darkness,” he said.

Approximately four years ago, Justin Hawkins departed from The Darkness. In a statement, the reaction of the remainder of the group was one of “total shock”. They subsequently separated until this reforming occurred. Speaking to Newsbeat about the music group, Hawkins explained that “[t]he main thing for us is to make sure that musically we turn the experience into something positive again.”

“We’ve been remembering why it was so much fun in the first place, just four men making loud music in a room,” Hawkins commented. Speaking about the bodysuits he was known for wearing, Hawkins also said that “I think it should be a new phase and that should be extended to the clothing. Not a lesser phase, if anything a cranked up version. They’ll be more good.”
