Recalled pet food found to contain rat poison

Friday, March 23, 2007

In a press release earlier today, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, along with Dean of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Donald F. Smith, confirmed that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified Aminopterin as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods.

Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

Aminopterin is a drug used in chemotherapy for its immunosuppressive properties and, in some areas outside the US, as a rat poison. Earlier reports stated that wheat gluten was a factor being investigated, and officials now state that the toxin would have come from Chinese wheat used in the pet food, where it is used for pest control. Investigators will not say that this is the only contaminant found in the recalled food, but knowing the identity of the toxin should assist veterinarians treating affected animals.

The Food Laboratory tested samples of cat food received from a toxicologist at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University. The samples were found to contain the rodenticide at levels of at least 40 parts per million.

Commissioner Hooker stated, “We are pleased that the expertise of our New York State Food Laboratory was able to contribute to identifying the agent that caused numerous illnesses and deaths in dogs and cats across the nation.”

The press release suggests Aminopterin, a derivative of folic acid, can cause cancer and birth defects in humans and can cause kidney damage in dogs and cats. Aminopterin is not permitted for use in the United States.

The New York State Food Laboratory is part of the Federal Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) and as such, is capable of running a number of unique poison/toxin tests on food, including the test that identified Aminopterin.

Times Square bomb suspects arrested in Pakistan

Saturday, May 22, 2010

At least six suspects, wanted in connection with a failed car bomb attempt in Times Square, New York City on May 1, have been arrested by authorities in Pakistan. The arrests follow a visit to Pakistan by two high-ranking American security officials—US National Security Adviser Gen James Jones and Leon Panetta, director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), both of whom praised Pakistan for its efforts in tracking down suspects in the bomb attack.

Amongst those arrested are the co-owner of a large company which provides catering to several embassies in Pakistan and a major in the Pakistani Army, though the Army released a statement denying any involvment. Some are believed to have been educated in the United States. A notice on the website of the US embassy in Islamabad reported that the catering company co-owned by one of the suspects had links to terrorism and has since advised US citizens against using the firm.

Those arrested are believed to have had links with Faisal Shahzad, the primary suspect in the bombing, who was arrested on May 3 on board an aircraft at New York’s JFK Airport.

One source told Reuters: “We are investigating whether Ashraf has provided any financial support to Faisal because Ashraf and his father are rich people and they run a very big catering business” though another stated that “[t]hey may be innocent because being friends does not mean you are involved in the activities of your friends”.

The suspects are currently being detained by the Pakistani security services, who are known to have close links with the CIA, to the extent of allowing CIA officials access to prisoners.

New Mars Orbiter arrives for launch

Wednesday, May 4, 2005

NASA‘s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), the latest robotic spacecraft destined for Mars, arrived at Kennedy Space Center‘s Shuttle Landing Facility on April 30 aboard a C-17 cargo plane and was delivered to the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility to begin processing. Launching is scheduled for August 10, 2005.

With a mission time line through 2010, the MRO will conduct studies of the Martian atmosphere, surface and subsurface in far greater detail than previous missions. Possible landing sites for future Mars landings will be evaluated and the orbiter will also act as a high-data-rate communications relay for surface missions.

“Great work by a talented team has brought Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to this milestone in our progress toward a successful mission,” said Jim Graf of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) project manager for the mission.

Multiple mechanical assembly operations and electrical tests are scheduled to verify the craft’s readiness for launch. A May test to verify communication abilities through NASA’s Deep Space Network will be conducted and in June deployment of the high gain communications antenna will be tested. A deployment test is also scheduled for the Orbiter’s large solar arrays.

The MRO will be filled with hydrazine fuel in July for its “Mars orbit insertion burn” which reduces the craft’s velocity and places it in orbit about the red planet. July 26 will see the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter installed in an Atlas V rocket fairing for final assembly with the rocket on July 29.

After the scheduled launch, the MRO will spend seven months cruising to Mars and another six months aerobraking after orbital insertion. A variety of scientific instruments on board will be used to search for geological evidence of past seas, ancient shorelines. The craft was built near Denver by Lockheed Martin Space Systems which also supplies the Atlas V launch vehicle.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission is managed by JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems is the prime contractor for the project. International Launch Services, a Lockheed Martin joint venture, and Lockheed Martin Space Systems are providing launch services for the mission.

Why Not Use Mini Storage For My Records Storage?

Submitted by: Michael Thomas

File storage of your important papers is a necessity for every business. Once you are done with files and as they age you need to consider your options for records management. The first step is to determine where you will keep the older files. Storing files at your office takes up space and requires constant upkeep. Organizing and storing files is time-consuming and needs to be done on an ongoing basis. This takes manpower and commitment. It also requires training your employees on how to manage files. You’ll also need to have someone from the management staff in charge of document records. All this can be overwhelming.

The best alternative is to use a professional records management company to take care of filing and storage of all your documents. The first thought may be to simply put your old files in a rented mini storage unit. While this may solve the initial problem of space constraints in your office it does little else. In fact it can actually cause problems later on. To begin with someone needs to properly organize your document boxes so that files can be found later when needed. This is almost impossible to do in a self-storage unit because every time you add a box you will need to shuffle and re-sort all the boxes to make the files accessible.

Another problem with using mini storage is a lack of temperature and weather control. When files are kept in heat, cold and humid conditions they can deteriorate and you may find that the condition of some of the files renders them unusable. It’s also inconvenient to use a mini storage space. When you need to either file or retrieve a file you will need to send employees to the location and have them hunt for the items. This can be next to impossible when the weather is extreme. It is a time-waster to send your employees to the storage facility to hunt for the proper files. When filing boxes are disorganized it can take all day or longer to locate the proper box let alone file.

While you may think that using a mini storage facility for file storage is inexpensive it actually ends up costing more than you think in the long run. Controlling the organization of files is a necessary ongoing function that will require staff whether you store at your own premise or at a mini storage location. It also takes time and effort to locate files when needed. Of course there is also an ongoing monthly rental expense that doesn’t include manpower. All these costs add up and can actually end up costing you the same as hiring a records management company to do the entire job for you.

When you use a records storage company all the work is done for you. Your files are organized and stored properly and efficiently. You can locate when you need when you need it and the boxes are in a controlled and accessible environment. Outsourcing just makes sense from a business perspective; it allows you to have your records when you need them yet have no need to supply additional manpower to the function or lose precious time waiting for the files to be retrieved.

Perhaps most importantly, the cost of using an Outsourced Records Management Facility is typically much less than the cost of using a Self-Storage Facility. This may surprise many people, but when you use a mini-storage unit, you re usually paying for space you re not using to it s full capacity. With an outsourced Records Management Company, you re able to pay per-box, so you can contain costs by paying for exactly what you need.

Japanese detain two anti-whaling activists, deny abuse claims

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Yesterday at 6:00 UTC at 60° S 78° E , a Japanese whaling ship detained two Sea Shepherd Conservation Society activists in the Southern Ocean. Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research (IRC) deny Sea Shepherd claims that they have been abused. The Japanese government has assured the Australian Government the release of the men.

According to the conservation agency Sea Shepherd, Australian Benjamin Potts, 28, a helicopter assistant, and Briton Giles Lane, an engine room worker, were detained on board a Yushin Maru No. 2 after delivering a letter asking the ship to exit Antarctic waters .

Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd’s vessel, Steve Irwin, said that the Japanese “tried to throw them overboard, then they tied them to a bulkhead and were beating them”.

He alleged that the men were tied to the radar masts before being brought below deck after which the men were not seen. Sea Shepherd’s international director, Jonny Vasic, claimed that they were “basically strapped by the arms with zip-ties and tied with rope around their chests” for 2½ to three hours.

The captain said he was surprised as he expected Japanese whale ships to treated his men more decently.

“We are concerned but I know the Australian and British governments are in touch with the Japanese government.”

Sea Shepherd said it has photographic evidence that the whalers were abusing the men.

However, the Japanese ship refuted the allegations.

“Any accusations that we have tied them up or assaulted them are completely untrue,” Director-general of the IRC Minoru Morimoto said in the press release, “It is illegal to board another country’s vessels on the high seas.”

Detaining the activists was the “only way”, he said. “You couldn’t have them running around the deck not knowing what they’re going to do.”

He said that the activists were making attempts to entangle the screw and were throwing bottles of butyric acid, as rancid butter, onto the deck of the vessel before boarding the vessel. Mr Watson has confirmed this and said that they were to act as a stink bomb but their actions were still peaceful.

Hideki Moronuki, the chief of the whaling section of The Fisheries Agency of Japan, claimed that “nobody took violent action against the two illegal intruders”.

Mr. Moronuki said that they were treated “very, very humanely” and were provided with “a warm, delicious hot meal”, “[a] warm, nice bath” and “[a] nice bed with clean white sheets”.

Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith said that the Japanese government promised him the release of the men late yesterday night.

“Late last night I was advised the Japanese had agreed to this and they had instructed the relevant whaling ship to return the men to the Steve Irwin,” he told ABC radio.

Mr. Moronuki said the “two illegal intruders” will not be released by the vessel’s captain until “Paul Watson has accepted the conditions of the safety of the Japanese vessel”. He said he knew nothing of the comments that the Japanese government agreeing to release the men.

Mr. Watson said the Japanese were “[holding] hostages and make demands” and were acting like “a terrorist organisation”. A press release said Sea Shepherd “will not negotiate with poachers and demands that the Japanese whalers release Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane as soon as possible”.

Mr. Watson said he would not send a zodiac to collect the men as requested in an email because it “endangers the life of the crew, to put them out in these waters in a small boat, 10 miles out of view”.

On Sky TV, IRC spokesman Glenn Inwood said Sea Shepherd were “not answering phone calls or emails at this stage” to take advantage of “fair amount of media coverage” but they were “still making attempts to contact them”.

An Australian Federal Police spokeswoman said that Sea Shepherd made a police report at around 7:00 UTC.

Evergrande real estate firm makes missed September bond payment, avoids default

Saturday, October 23, 2021

China property giant Evergrande Group wired USD83.5 million in interest owed in an offshore bond from September 23 on Thursday, temporarily averting default, according to a Reuters source and Chinese newspaper Securities Times.

The wire to a Citibank fiduciary account following a 30-day grace period came after assurances by various members of the Chinese government, Reuters reported. At a Beijing forum Wednesday, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He described the risks as controllable, and chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission Yi Huiman said that while authorities needed to curb excessive debt more broadly by “improv[ing] the effectiveness of the constraint mechanism on debt financing”, the matter would be dealt with properly.

Once China’s top real estate developer, Evergrande had accumulated approximately USD305 billion in liabilities, two per cent of the Chinese gross national product, after “dwindling resources” cut its value by 80%, according to Reuters. September data revealed Chinese home sales by value fell by nearly 17% year-on-year, according to The Guardian, and fears over its default led to a slowdown in China’s third quarter GDP growth to a year low of 4.9%. Two sale negotiations with rival developers Hopson Development and Yuexiu, valued at USD2.6 billion and USD1.7 billion, respectively, were suspended, reportedly due to a lack of consent by the government of Guangdong province currently overseeing Evergrande’s restructuring.

News of Evergrande’s remittance caused its shares to rise by as much as 7.8% this morning after a two-week pause in trading for the anticipated sale of 50.1% in Evergrande Property Services Group, and offering some reprieve for bondholders, according to Reuters. Portfolio manager at GaoTeng Global Asset Management James Wong, interviewed by The Guardian, called the news “a positive surprise”, adding “[i]f Evergrande pays this time, I don’t see why it won’t pay the next time.” Jun Rong Yeap for IG Asia pte., interviewed by Bloomberg, said the report “overturned” the narrative “that Evergrande will face difficulty in securing cash ahead”.

Further missed payments are due October 29 and November 11 after similar 30-day grace periods; including yesterday’s USD83.5 million, nearly USD280 million is owed to bondholders.

Stocks have been down for many major Chinese developers: Reuters Wednesday reported year-to-date stock prices fell 87.8% for Sinic Holdings, currently in Fitch Ratings’ ‘restricted default’ after failing to make an October 18 bond payment valued, according to The Guardian, at USD246 million; 80.2% for Evergrande itself; 78.3% for E-House, 58.5% for Fantasia Holdings and 54.6% for Kaisa Group, which defaulted in 2015 and had bonds reach record lows.

Estimates of the Chinese real estate market’s size range from 16 to 25% of the Chinese gross domestic product, according to The Guardian. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s aim to transform the country’s economy from one of debt-fuelled “inflated” growth to one of improved “quality and returns” included imposing regulations on developers that limited their capacity to borrow. A Guardian comment piece from economist George Magnus published on October 15 made reference to China’s “ghost cities” and “rampant credit creation” that has given rise to high vacancy rates and the “financialisaton of housing”.

Are Compatible Toner Cartridges As Good As Oe Ms?

Read An Opinion On:

By Ben Greenwood

When deciding which type of replacement cartridges to buy for your printer, you may be a bit overwhelmed by the number of options. Whether you need toner or ink cartridges, you will usually have the option of buying new original equipment manufacturer (OEM) consumables, new compatible consumables manufactured by a third party, or reconditioned, “remanufactured”, cartridges, made by refilling and overhauling used OEM cartridges. From a consumer perspective it is therefore natural to ask if compatible cartridges are of the same quality as OEM ones, as they are often significantly cheaper.

When looking to see if a compatible consumable is as good as the OEM recommended version, the question needs to be asked if you are really comparing like-for-like. You will be paying less per print if using a compatible cartridge, but will not have the support of the OEM in terms of reliability and quality. The issue then becomes if the compatible version will give you better value for your money. Many people have reported that non-OEM ink cartridges show a significant reduction in performance and reliability, even accounting for the reduction in price. Ink quality is often lower, and the interface with the printer is more likely to suffer from interference or errors. However, results for toner cartridges are more mixed.

This is because, unlike ink, toner is a standardised product, and manufacturers of compatible or remanufactured cartridges are therefore better able to produce a match for the printer’s exact requirements. The remaining issues of compatibility of interface are addressed most directly by using cartridges reconditioned from used OEM consumables (although these may still have issues if the interface is worn), or by ensuring that you purchase from a reputable third party manufacturer with its own guarantee. Manufacturers with ISO 9001 certification are likely to be more reliable and produce better quality goods than those without.

The quality of the drum and drum blade are very important in a toner cartridge, and these should be the focus of your quality checks. Find out if they have they been replaced (in a reconditioned cartridge), and if they are of a comparable quality and design to the OEM recommended cartridge. If these items check out, the consistency of toner quality means that a compatible toner cartridge may well be as good as an OEM piece of equipment for basic printing purposes, as well as almost certainly being cheaper. In the case of reconditioned cartridges, they will also be better for the environment, wasting fewer raw materials, and delaying the disposal of several sorts of non-biodegradable waste. However, don’t forget that even brand-new OEM cartridges fail from time to time, so there may still be issues with even the best third party cartridge.

Those who demand very high quality printing (photo quality or higher) may find that the clarity of non-OEM cartridges reduces faster than that of OEM ones, and if this type of printing (low volume, high resolution) is what is required, saving a little money on consumables may be offset by reprints to obtain satisfactory quality. You should also remember that using non-OEM toner cartridges may invalidate your warranty, so they may be a false economy until this has expired.

Drought conditions and high winds lead to wildfires in Texas

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Fire authorities struggled to manage a vast string of wildfires stretching across the eastern part of Texas on Sunday. News sources report that prolonged dry conditions and excessive winds were the main factors in the blazes.

Traffic along Interstate-20 near Longview, Texas was backed up for several miles. Fire authorities fought a brush fire in Tyler, near Tyler Pounds Field airport; a large truck near this area was also ablaze. A fire threatened a power sub-station near the city of Van. Regional utilities companies reported Sunday that over 8,000 customers were without electricity.

A church in Hallsville opened to assist evacuees. Residences spanning several counties were evacuated by authorities for safety reasons. Multiple residences in north-central Anderson county were evacuated by fire officials about two hours after a large blaze there erupted. Authorities closed off a 9-mile perimeter of roadways surrounding this blaze. Many homes in the area were blanketed with a thick haze of visible smoke. One evacuee told Wikinews, “I have [homeowner’s] insurance. I got my dog, that matters a’ lot to me.”

Experts: obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu

Friday, September 8, 2006

From September 3 to 8, experts gathered at the 10th International Congress on Obesity in Sydney, Australia, to discuss what they call the worldwide “obesity epidemic”. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 billion people in the world today are overweight, and 300 million of those are obese. “Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer“, a WHO fact sheet states. According to AP, experts at the conference “have warned that obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu, and will easily overwhelm the world’s health care systems if urgent action is not taken”.

Of particular concern is the large number of overweight children. Dr. Stephan Rossner from Sweden’s Karolinska University Hospital, a leading obesity expert who was present at the conference, has warned that as a result of the increasing number of overweight children, “we will have, within a decade or two, a number of young people who are on kidney dialysis. There will not be organs for everybody”. UK-based International Obesity Task Force has said that junk food manufacturers target children, for example, through Internet advertising, chat rooms, text messages, and “advergames” on websites. Politicians are not doing enough to address the problem of obesity, including childhood obesity, the experts said.

According to Wikipedia, examples of junk food include, but are not limited to: hamburgers, pizza, candy, soda, and salty foods like potato chips and french fries. A well-known piece of junk food is the Big Mac. The US version of just one Big Mac burger contains 48% of calories from fat, 47% US Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of fat, 52% RDA of saturated fat, 26% RDA of cholesterol, 42% RDA of sodium, and little nutritional value. It also has 18% of calories from protein. According to WHO, most people need only about 5% calories from protein. Staples such as rice, corn, baked potatoes, pinto beans, as well as fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, oranges, and strawberries, provide more than this required amount of protein without the unhealthy amounts of fats or sodium, without cholesterol, and with plenty of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Both WHO and the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define overweight in adults as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or above, and obese as a BMI of 30 or above. To combat overweight and obesity, WHO recommends that, among other things, people should be taking the following steps

 • eating more fruit and vegetables, as well as nuts and whole grains;
 • engaging in daily moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes;
 • cutting the amount of fatty, sugary foods in the diet;
 • moving from saturated animal-based fats to unsaturated vegetable-oil based fats.

Understanding Other Health Care Plans From A Foreign Point Of View

Understanding Other Health Care Plans From A Foreign Point Of View

by

Ethan B Kalvin

It is very true that the more information you have at your disposal, the better informed you become allowing you to make better decisions. It is common practice for many Americans to blindly believe what we are being told via the media sources, when in fact the real truth is that some of the reporting has very little real truth and is easily disputed when we make the effort to investigate the facts for ourselves. How sad it is that many of the important life decisions we make are based on mis-information or wrong facts.

For instance one of the things that our government would like all Americans to believe is that socialized medicine is bad. They use the guise of communism and government control to make people think that this type of medicine would be a bad thing or is something undesirable. They tell stories of doctors being controlled, not making any money, and of patients dying while waiting for treatment. They say that a government health care plan very simply won’t be as effective as the plan currently in place and that Americans will wind up paying more for health care in the form of taxes than most are currently paying now. The socialized medicine scare we have blindly bought into is beginning to be challenged with credible evidence contray to what we have been feed for decades as the truth. Sicko, a documentary film about health care, documents doctors and patients view of the socialized system and the current American system of care. Doctors report not having any fears of not getting paid or being underpaid for their services in a timely manner and they are well pleased with the socialized medical care system they are practicing under. Being able to see a doctor for any condition at any time without any red tape associated with the income of the individual is one of the things that patients really like about the socialized medical care system. They can choose what doctor they will see for treatment or consultation and the whole routine is without hesitation; they receive the care they need and are sent on their way. It would seem that the only losers are those in other types of medical care systems and plans and clearly the real winners in the U.S. care system are those who refuse to consider any changes that will bring health care cost down to a affordable level, which they are fiercely refusing to do. The old arguments that government run health care doesn’t work well or serve the people well, is getting pretty tried and lame. It has for years, served countries like Canada, Cuba and many other nations well with impressive results. The propaganda machine is unwilling to give up the golden goose egg and continue to make trillions off of sickness in America, if it means having to forfeit their own interests and greed.
