Occupation in London enters fifth day

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

In solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street and other “Occupy” protests, activists set up camp outside St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Saturday, and they plan to remain indefinitely. The protest thus far has been described as “largely peaceful” by a police spokesman.

On Saturday, an estimated thousand or more people attempted to protest in Paternoster Square, the site of the London Stock Exchange, but were blocked by police enforcing a High Court judgment. Julian Assange from Wikileaks also joined the protest to address the activists. A flag flies over the occupation showing the ‘Anonymous’ logo of a headless man in a black suit.

At around 9:30am Wednesday, many campers were still asleep, but around 30–50 people were listening in solidarity to trade union representatives from the National Shop Stewards Network, while 20 to 30 officers from the City of London police watched on. On the steps of St. Paul’s Cathedral, the speakers spoke about a variety of struggles including strikes by electricians that started in August against Balfour Beatty, one of Britain’s largest construction firms. Solidarity was expressed with the travellers at Dale Farm, and speakers described how the media and others were trying to “divide” workers, students and elderly people. One of the speakers said that while today they are occupying the square in London, “tomorrow we will be occupying universities and colleges” and spoke of the suspension of Vik Chechi, the Unison branch secretary who has been suspended by Queen Mary University. By 9:45am, the trade union talks had finished and the sound system was reactivated and reggae music started playing.

After the talks peter out, activity begins to resume on the site: people sorting out tents and serving food, under signs and banners playfully mixing politics (“The London Stock Exchange: Britain’s Biggest Casino”) with Internet memes (a Reddit cartoon man depicted saying “Y U NO JOIN US?”).

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

6 Reasons To Obtain Real Estate Mentoring

Submitted by: Bryan Upton

Looking for a good reason to obtain real estate mentoring? Here are 6 of them that will convince you it s the right way to get into real estate investing.

1. You may be barking up the wrong tree-When the average person decides to get involved in real estate investing, where do they turn? Typically, they go out trying to find a cheap house. After all, foreclosures are all the rage these days. That said, you may find yourself purchasing one of those foreclosure lists and searching for that perfect, undervalued home. And that s not to say they aren t out there-they are. But let us assure you that stripping the home, redesigning it, and renting it out will be no cakewalk. And not only is it difficult, but it s not where the real money is. When you obtain real estate mentoring, you ll find that you just might be looking for gold in all the wrong places. There are better alternatives out there.

2. The real estate industry is full of misconceptions-Sure there are plenty of free real estate courses on the web, but most of those are designed more to get you to buy a product as opposed to actually providing you with good information. Instead what you end up finding is a lot of misinformation. And if you operate off of this information, you ll probably be scared away from real estate investing altogether. Here s where real estate mentoring can help you out: by clearing up the misconceptions and steering you in the right direction.

3. You just can t beat experience-Sure you could go it alone. Those self-made millionaires really do exist. But guess what the odds are of you becoming one? Slim to none. Now on the other hand, when you opt for real estate mentoring and tap into the knowledge pool of experienced real estate professionals, you make the odds work for you.

4. The money is real-Plain and simple, there is money to be made in real estate. We aren t talking about some scam that will have you getting involved in sketchy deals, pulling the wool over someone s eyes, and reaching into their pockets. And we certainly aren t talking about purchasing on a crapshoot, crossing your fingers, and hoping your gambling pays off. You could just drive a couple of hours to a Louisiana casino for that. No, we re talking about tried and true methods to become a savvy real estate investor. No gimmicks. The money is out there and someone is going to try to make it. Why not you?

5. You don t want to outlive your savings-Did you know that the general public is more worried about outliving its savings than actual death? Take a minute and think about that. It s powerful. Did you know that financial woes are the number one reason marriages fail? That s heavy too. Here s what it comes down to: that old adage about money not buying happiness, well, it s only half true. You can have money and still be miserable, but it certainly cuts out key stressors from your life!

6. You re an outside-of-the-box kind of person-And last but not least, real estate mentoring offers a different view of real estate investing for people just like you-those who aren t happy with status quo. Those who like to approach a problem from a different angle.

Is real estate mentoring right for you? We think so. Find out now how to put your money to work for you by investing in the purchase of apartment homes and being told exactly how to do it along the way.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

‘Freedom Tower’ renamed ‘1 World Trade Center’

Saturday, March 28, 2009

The 108-floor central component of the new World Trade Center in New York City has been officially renamed 1 World Trade Center, ending the Freedom Tower moniker it had sported since 2003.

Freedom Tower was envisioned as a symbol of America’s victory over terrorism. It is currently on track for completion in 2013, with 10 floors partially finished so far.

Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia commented on the change, “It’s the one that is easiest for people to identify with — and frankly, we’ve gotten a very interested and warm reception to it.”

Former Governor George Pataki, who revealed the Freedom Tower name nearly six years ago, was critical of the switch, saying “The Freedom Tower is not simply another piece of real estate and not just a name for marketing purposes.”

1 World Trade Center has been the building’s legal name and address for the past two years, with the public change precipitated by the ramp up of construction and the commencement of lease marketing.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg seemed ambivalent to the change, saying “I would like to see it stay the Freedom Tower, but it’s their building, and they don’t need me dumping on it. If they could rent the whole thing by changing the name, I guess they’re going to do that, and they probably, from a responsible point of view, should. From a patriotic point of view, is it going to make any difference?”

The change was approved following the signing of a two-decades-long lease by a Chinese real estate company, which plans to occupy floors 64 through 69. Other future tenants include the U.S. General Services Administration and the New York State Office of General Services.

Losing A Child Forever: A Parent’s Greatest Fear

By Aseya Me

The recent headlines about the kidnapping of 21 South Korean missionaries in Afghanistan has brought shock and outrage in many parts of the world. The killing of two missionaries who were part of that group further heightened the tension in South Korea. However, the most disturbing scene that came out of that incident was the video of the wailing parents who pleaded for the lives of their children who were made prisoners by the Taliban. One Korean mother even pleaded that she be taken by the Taliban in place of her daughter. Such is the love of a parent for a child.

The news also brought to the fore the truth that there is no fear that haunts any parent more than the possibility of losing a child. The case of a lost or missing child, at least, provides the possibility of reunion. But the death of a son or daughter has a certain finality, a point of no return. Moreover, a child dying before the parent is simply looked at as an anomaly, a completely tragic and unnatural event. Regardless of country or culture, parents always believe that they are supposed to die before their children.

All parents, at some point in life, would think about death and the day when they would finally leave their children. It is a painful thought that no parent would dare dwell on except perhaps when one is seriously ill or so advanced in age. But what causes even more stress and anxiety is the thought of losing a child.

Parents normally see themselves as completely responsible for raising their children which entails going to work in order to raise money for food, shelter, clothing, and school expenses. Beyond the material things, parents also seriously take their role as the first teachers of their children. Before they die, they want to see their children finish school, and if possible, get married and start a family of their own. This, for most parents, is the natural law and cycle of human life.

Losing a child during pregnancy or during the delivery….in an accident…in war… or because of a violent crime…all these tragic events cause untold grief and depression not only for the parents but for the rest of the family. Seeing a child die is a scene that causes deep emotional pain that could scar for life. The distress caused by losing a loved one, especially a young child, can hurt so much that a parent could even temporarily lose the ability to think rationally. With the loss of appetite and sleeplessness, a grieving parent also loses interest in relating with other people, even those from their own family. The depression totally takes over the life of a grieving mother or father, debilitating them physically and emotionally.

During a wake, most people try to give the grieving parent some words of encouragement. But these words often do not help and may even make it more difficult for them. Some would even say, ‘It’s all right…death is part of life,’ or ‘Everything will be okay. At least, your son is now in heaven.’ These words often add more hurt rather than comfort to the grieving parent. For this reason, it is important to understand that a grieving parent or any person who lost a loved one undergoes a grieving process. This process involves the following stages: denial, sadness and depression, anger, and acceptance. A parent who first learns about the death of a child will be filled with shock. This will be followed by denial – a psychological defense mechanism that is intent on blocking the sad news about the death of a child. Once the parent is able to understand that the child has really died, the next set of emotions to come will be sadness and depression. At this stage, the parent would usually reminisce about the times spent with the child — from the time that the child was born, to birthdays, holidays, and other happy memories. These thoughts tend the deepen the sadness and depression of the parent. In some cases, the depression can be so severe that a grieving parent may have to be given anti-depressant prescriptions. After some time, anger may set in and makes it even possible for the grieving parent to blame God for the death of the child. After this stage of anger, which is the most emotionally heightened period of the grieving process, the parent will eventually accept the situation and the death of the child.

It will take some more time but emotional healing is eventually attained. The length it takes to have emotional healing, of course, depends on the ability and willingness of the parent. Some find it hard to let go, while others are able to move on because of their emotional and spiritual stability.

Indeed, there are no words that can comfort a parent who just lost a child. It takes time, a lot of prayer, and acceptance to get over the death of a son or a daughter. In reality, a parent never really gets over the death of a child. Moving on is not about forgetting the child but about embracing death as an inevitable part of life — and about retaining the best and happiest memories they had together even if the child has passed on and the parent still has to continue living.

New Zealand suicide rate decreases

Tuesday, August 1, 2006

A new report released by the New Zealand Ministry of Health titled “Suicide Trends” shows that the suicide rate in New Zealand has decreased 15% since its peak in the late 1990’s, but the attempted suicide rate is increasing.

There were 12 deaths per 100,000 people between 1983-’85. 16.7 deaths per 100,000 people between 1996-’98. And 14.2 deaths per 100,000 people between 2001-’03. But there were 73.1 attempted suicides per 100,000 people between 1995-’97 compared to 82.5 in 2002-’04.

Jim Anderton, Associate Health Minister, said “It provides some comfort to see the long-term trend still appears to be heading in the right direction, with a continued decline or levelling off of self-inflicted deaths but there is no room for complacency.”

The suicide report also shows that:

 • The 25- to 34-year-old age group has the highest suicide rate
 • Between 2000-’03 Maori has the highest suicide rate
 • Men were less likely than woman to go to hospital for attempted suicide because more men died from suicide.

The New Zealand Government has put NZ$10.3 million towards direct suicide prevention. New Zealand News agencies are banned by law from reporting suicide deaths.

Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.
